It was Amazon’s biggest show of all time and every single metric that was a big success for them. The only people claiming it wasn’t are people who are just arbitrarily saying “it cost a lot so I think it should do more” without any real knowledge of the economics behind it.

Aka it’s a vague claim that has nothing to back it up by people in a sub that didn’t like the show before it was released

Also Dahmer is on the biggest streaming platform in the world and it outdid many more expensive shows, that’s more about how much of an out of nowhere hit and a testament to its success.

Yup it’s pretty clear the royals and their sympathizers loved the rosy early seasons that glorified Elizabeth and the rest of the family. Once it started getting into more recent issues where they were factually on the wrong side of things, they got pissed. They all just wanted royal propaganda

In a show like this where the characters are generally more known to audiences and fans of the lore, it's sometimes better to avoid having a recognizeable face in a big role.

Tbh, I would venture to say in HOTD 99% of the people watching haven't seen D'Arcy or Cooke in anything. And even someone like Ifans is a bit more of a character actor and I'm willing to bet most people didn't realize he was the Lizard in the Amazing Spider-Man.

Late 90's and early 00's. You had a lot of groundbreaking shows that pioneered the genre and prestige tv formats but still had a bit of the freedom to experiment that made them creatively unique in a way modern shows don't neccessarily have.

Honestly when Netflix was cancelling shows people were bitching nonstop about how horrible it was and how the service was sucking and going to fall apart. It just outperformed what was supposed to be a doomsday quarterly report and smoked everyones expectations and now it's stock is shooting up. Just maybe even though people online complained about what was cancelled, Netflix knows what drives numbers.

Zaslav is a business guy who is coming in to fix a bloated company that was in debt and throwing every thing at the wall that they possibly could. Now people are complaining that he's killing everything by cancelling projects that look like they probably aren't profitable.

People do need to realize that at some point the party was always going to end for every streaming service and the motion was going to shift from "pour content out to attract consumers" to "become efficient and maintain profitability".

  1. HOTD is not a show for kids and families

  2. The amount of written material on HOTD and the Second Age of LOTR is about the same. HOTD is based off a fake history book and it really doesn’t have a full narrative and when it does it contradicts itself with varying perspectives. Also the Silmarillion is mostly a first age work. Second Age is more defined in short stories, extensive appendices and materials written by Tolkien and what we know in the books when they talk about it

No. Buffy is probably one of the best and most important genre shows of it's era. Complaining about the limitations of CGI on cable television in the late 90's is about the lamest critique you could ever have imo. You are talking about something that is closing in on a quarter of a century and had to fit that CGI budget with 22 episodes of other effects needed for the season.

Anyways Buffy pretty much perfected the 22 episode genre television format. It pioneered a bunch of themes that weren't being touched upon in mainstream entertainment at the time and constantly was pushing the boundaries of the show and experimenting with different styles.

It's also not really a secret that the biggest movie franchise in the world is basically using Buffy style dialogue for all it's films now because the showrunner directed one of the most successful films in the series and they decided that's how everyone is going to talk and react now. Buffy speak is now Avengers speak.

Well the show is basically a character study of Tony. I guess from season 4 you could argue Phil Leotardo was built as the primary antagonist and Tony falling out of favor with the NY outlet and Phil rising and capitalizing was the big story arc of the show.

But it's really about the psychosis of a sociopath involved in organized crime and how that functions within a family life and how people cope.

Batman changing methods and adding to the lore isn’t the same as radical character swings. Also the JL version has only succeeded in the context of being on a show with Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. That show wouldn’t be any less well received if you put in literally any other Green Lantern. In fact the irony is they only put Jon in there to avoid a fan flame war with Hal and Kyle fans

Jon Stewart is not more interesting as a character. He literally doesn’t have a consistent character. He started out as an angry black man stereotype, then shifted between military hardass and ultra passive. He basically just is whatever the story requires

I like Jon Stewart, but he works way better when he’s in a supporting role like Justice League. Hal and Kyle are the only two that have succeeded as the main GL

While this is true, GL worked in the context of being on an ensemble in that show.

Hal Jordan has the personal ties to the main villain (Sinestro) the second biggest villain (Star Sapphire) is the central figure in Emerald Twilight, Rebirth, Sinestro Corp and Blackest Night. He starts the GL legacy on Earth.

Also unlike Jon, Hal is pretty consistent character. Jon Stewart has been reworked and altered so much over the years

The first episode had a prologue scene that had nothing to do with most of the episodes plot besides killing the deserter, then that prologue didn’t matter until like 7 or 8 episodes in where one more plot point was brought up.

Then 90% of the episode was just introducing various characters and table setting. Then at the very end it showed Bran being knocked off the tower and kicked off the incest plot

The first episode of HOTD had a prologue with a succession crisis to set the scene for a similar central conflict the entire show, then had Daemon slaughtering people and set up conflict in court, then we got a violent tourney, the seeds for Alicent and Viserys, a miscarriage that threw the succession back into question, and the finally Daemon being disinherited and Rhaenyra being made heir.
