Why does this subreddit seem to only attract people who believe we'll be out of work next Tuesday?

I frequent other TECH subreddits and other TECH forums/websites on the internet, but this is the only one that I visit where the overwhelming majority believe "AI-induced job apocalypse very soon". Those other communities that I am a part of have more balanced and grounded/realistic debates/takes about the future of work and AI.

No, they aren't because what you're describing isn't gonna happen (at the very least not with current/near term AI). Be realistic.

The hopium on this sub is on another level. You guys upvote comments just because they sound pretty to you, even if they aren't the slightest bit rational.

If we ever succeeded at building AGI, I suspect that the change that would come afterwards would be gradual, as it is in the best interest of humanity for society to change gradually as supposed to suddenly. Regardless, like I've already said, I'm skeptical that such an event is a mere few years away from taking place. That would imply that we'd be going 0 to 100, real quick (lol), though of course by 0 I don't mean we don't have useful AI today, I'm just implying that the leap from now to AGI would feel like that.

It depends on what your definition of the singularity is. If it's human/superhuman-level AI, I can see it happening one day, sure. But if it's this mind-boggling event where everything gets completely transformed in the blink of eye, that's where you lose me. A belief in the latter is rooted in fantaticism, IMO. In any case, I certainly don't expect it to happen in the middle of the next US presidential term.

I'm glad this concerns you. This should concern people.

And you're right, human relationships are hard. But that's the beauty of them, is that you have to work hard for them (Not so hard it's toxic, of course).

Another thing that makes relationships wonderful is that it's about your partner as much as you. If my former relationships had been only about me and not my partners, that would've been unbelievably boring and unbearable.

Idk, that's just my two cents. Like I said, I hope we don't reach a world where people choose to have an AI partner over a human one if the former is an option, but only time will tell.
