The worst part were the feral drunken high school students. I don't know if it was just parents getting lit early in the day and forgetting to pay attention to their kids, but literally packs of drunk high schoolers would roam down St. Charles making mayhem. I was in college there so I could handle a few beers, but I was still shocked each year at the sheer level of drunkeness on full display by almost everyone.

That's a tough boat to be in. This might not be a perfect idea but you could go look at post history for that group or similar from March/April last year to find old listings that had start dates in May, can reach out to whoever posted those to see if whoever rented the place is planning on renewing.

That show definitely raised the bar. Got me to revist my long-dormant Star Wars nerdiness. The episode escaping from the raid on the dam was spectacular, especially the visuals.

Am thirtysomething with child, can agree with others here, good vibes. Met up with other parent friends on a babysitter night, had some beers, thought their sandwich was very tasty, enjoyed the vibes. Not at all a VCU bar.

Went to McLean's for the first time recently for breakfast, no idea why it took us so long since it's a short walk away. It's basically a non-chain waffle house complete with coffee mugs that advertise land surveyors and personal injury lawyers, but honestly that's exactly what you want sometimes. Cheap, quick, and good. Surprised at how big it actually is once you're inside. Still haven't been to Moore St which is also a short walk away, someone convince me we still need to give it a shot.

Also went to El Pope again recently. The tortas and pupusas remain excellent, but I have a bad feeling that the place is maybe circling the drain since their beer taps haven't been functional for weeks, they only had a couple of incredibly bright lights on with a bunch of others off with no bulbs, the liquor bottles behind the bar all looked mostly empty... just had a "selling off what we have left" vibe, plus there was no music playing which is an odd thing in a mostly quiet restaurant. I hope I'm wrong and they are able to remain afloat.

Jardin: have gone here a couple of times recently, it's still surreal being in the old Baja space and not smelling vomit/spilled stale beer. They had a real jamon iberico leg for one of their charcuterie meats which is just about my favorite thing ever, bartender is a good dude after chatting with him for a while, patio is cozy... it's nice, just very much west end couples coming into the city for a date night vibes which some people may be put off by.

>I had a special celebration dinner at The Stables (with a gift card), and it was incredible. The food was amazing. Staff was friendly and attentive but not annoying. I keep thinking about when I can go back.

Going tomorrow night for fiance's bday. I love that place, the lamb lollipops are incredible. Consistently great service too. One lifehack is if you want an upscale dinner but don't have a reservation anywhere, their bar usually has spots open even on a Friday/Saturday and is very cozy.

When I worked with a view of this viaduct, you'd see a dozen or more trains a day (during work hours), but like others have said they don't run on a published timetable. I also think coal train traffic has declined significantly in the last couple of years, that was the bulk of the traffic ferrying huge coal trains from west virginia mines to the CSX coal docks in Hampton Roads, but there should still be plenty of other traffic.

Apparently all we watch are shows about rich people being terrible as I just finished season 3 of Succession (Roman sending the pic to his dad by mistake was about the hardest I've cringed and laughed at a show in ages) and also just watched both seasons of White Lotus.

Richmond restaurants at a certain quality/price point are very incestual in that they almost exclusively hire from within the existing pool of local servers/bartenders/managers who are recommended by their existing staff. Nothing wrong with that, you want to work with people you trust, just means it's hard for a new person to break into the really lucrative spots.

That said, a friend works at Jack Brown's and I'd imagine that must be a nice gig as far as serving goes, they're almost always packed, the menu is simple, no mixed drinks, just beers and burgers and steady churn for an entire shift in a space small enough that you can see all your tables at a glance.

The company sued for $1 plus legal costs... which were about $400k. I haven't read what actually happened in the court, but he definitely had to shut the page down and may be really hurting financially because of this. That company is a nightmare, but it is a fact that the existence of the meme page got all current employees pretty big raises and helped steer otherwise potential employees away from that hell hole, so it wasn't all in vain.

>but that place was so subpar in every aspect

It met expectations in the "place to have a draft beer on a rooftop at sunset without driving downtown" category. Can't really screw that up, fortunately.

Spot on. I have a toddler parent friend couple that moved here last year from NYC, drive a Tesla, and can't believe that they were able to afford a new construction home within walking distance of Carytown for a price that anyone who has lived here for years would find eye-watering while keeping their NYC salaries. This is about them.

>I’ve been on a hot streak lately so no underwhelming meals to report. Would love to know everyone’s thoughts on Sprezza. The reviews I’ve seen are very conflicting. She did make a ballsy statement on a podcast where she said that there is no authentic Italian restaurants in Richmond. I thought that was tasteless but it sounds like her food is tasteless as well.

Went for the christmas eve dinner, we'd had the pop up at Helen's which I thought was great and the various other take out only pop ups over the last year, all of it was delicious, but the food in their new place was just bad. Weird vibes with a stark white dining room, clearly hasn't been touched at all since it was a steak house, and a front of house staff that seemed leaderless and confused most of the night.

Watching the kitchen, it seemed like since this was a set menu they were staging courses but things were backing up, they had no heat lamps to keep dishes warm, and were sending out mostly cold plates with underseasoned food. There was even a fairly public meltdown between a table, the chef in the window, and a couple of servers over something. Pretty awkward, 2/10 will not go back. Edo's and Dinamo are much better Italian no matter what she may say in google reviews.
