I feared the potential liability of having an oil tank in the house. I read that if it leaks you are responsible for environmental cleanup both inside and outside and the cost would far out spend the cost of preemptively replacing the system so that's why I went ahead and got hat done immediately. Turns out I also needed a new roof, all new windows and doors and a new bath fitter immediately as well. 🤷‍♂️ Hopefully this house will give me a break soon!

First thing I did after buying this house in August was to ditch the oil tank and get a complete infrastructure replacement to go propane. Natural gas also not an option for me and neither were heat pumps because of the material and layout of the house (concrete walls on some and not an open floor plan) it was expensive costing around 13k but I knew I needed to get the oil tank our first thing. I've been paying around 200 a month each for propane and electricity

Hmm let's weigh months to see a doctor vs going 15 years without seeing one. Or months or a year for a surgery, that's going to be free, vs choosing to not have the surgery (or not even know that you need the surgery because you can't go to a doctor to figure it out) and then going bankrupt if you do chose to get the surgery. There's still a clear winner there. The cost of surgery here can cost several years salary. What about all the other bills and food costs you're expected pay? It's no contest

Oh awesome that sounds like an ideal situation! You and your family will be just fine, IMO, though I am not black though I am a mentor to someone who was born in Kenya who immigrated here as a child. Winooski has the highest population of POC in the state and Winooski school is probably the only school in the state that isn't mostly white. Winooski is quote far from Rutland though and I don't know much about that area.

I hope they are paying him a lot because the cost of living here is rather high and often times people who move for work get caught off guard. Also your biggest struggle may be actually finding somewhere acceptable to live. I've seen many people accept job offers only to search for housing for months only to have to sacrifice the offer and not move. Also the Rutland area is going to be way not as fun to live in compared to the Chittenden area so there's that too

Pretty positive UPS pays way more than FedEx. Not sure what FedEx gets but all UPS drivers make Over 6 figures after 4 years

Edit: not sure what FedEx gets because it's an entirely different system where rich people buy routes and trucks for FedEx delivery and then subcontract out the work to people willing to do it and pay them less than it's worth. Meanwhile UPS is a single system and a union with negotiation power.

Building requires a different type of loan product than buying a preexisting structure. You could get a mortgage with 5% down but to get a loan to build it requires minimum 30% down so it can be much more unacceptable plus you would likely have to pay to create a well system and a septic system. Large ticket items

There is NO good Mexican food. And IMO not many good food options in general anywhere for prepared food. Especially not anywhere with land and isolation. Great farms offer the freshest food to make meals at home though. Also you need money. Money is what you need to find a place to live because the markets are rough wether renting or buying.

The point was never about wether or not my keeping chickens would produce a profit for me or save me any money. I'm fully aware that I'm spending money on the chickens. They all have names and I've already spent over 2k on them. I was just saying that I don't want to spend more than I have to on an upgrade that I want to do for their health and comfort and well being. The fact that they taste dramatically better is icing on the cake the eggs already are. Legit my fish don't offer me anything I can cash out on yet I spend thousands on them too just because we love them

Yes. Are you suggesting to find a local individual or like company? I actually know one carpenter that I should ask but I don't know if she'll have the availability for my project. Please feel free to send over any recommendations!
