Waterproof? What type of material?

WiseChoices t1_iz6x7rt wrote

Wonderful! So durable.

Does it have extra pockets?

Does it have a pleat in the back?

How is that waterproof? I find that hard to believe.

We lost our trench coat privileges here in America.

It's very tightly compacted wool that's been cooked or something, I'm not exactly sure I'll ask a coworker of mine who knows more about this tomorrow! Might also be called velt, not entirely sure

regaphysics t1_iz702wg wrote

I’d call that water resistant, but that’s just me. Wool will still wet out after a while regardless of how compacted it is.

In any event I’d like to see how long it lasts in the rain! I bet it will manage for a while.

We've had our share of school shooters use them to hide weapons, they are frowned upon unless you're a white chick with a pumpkin spice latte in hand.

I was just tossing a little goof out there. Glad you've got a great jacket! Nothing better than finding undeniably great product.

My apologies, English isn't my native language, but it does keep the water out! I've worn it for hours on end in a typical Dutch rain storm and it held up great!

Had the same coat for years, gave it to a girlfriend who got it perfectly so the bottom edge just draped her ankles.

DrunkenHops t1_iz7fh86 wrote

I’m sure people here would be wearing them if they were as accessible to us as they are for Europeans. We have barely any good reproduction or surplus French coats in America, I’ve looked.

> Isn’t that just matrix trench coats?

Contrary to what many think they remember, Neo’s trench coat in the first film isn’t made of leather. It appears to be some matte tactical/performance material. Maybe even just cotton.

In fact, none of the outwear he wears in the original trilogy is leather. I don’t blame you for thinking that, though. Many of the other characters did have leather or leather-like coats.

Good on you! That is a coat that will look good no matter what the fashion trends are.

chokehodl t1_iz8bv2g wrote

Yes pretty much. When I was a kid I loved the Matrix and me and my friends would all dress up im trench coats and play with Nerf guns or water guns. One of my neighbors called the cops on us because they thought we looked like the Columbine shooters.

Amazing! I would probably get it shortened to right around the knee for a bit modern look though but that's a personal preference...

I used to own one very similar. Great for the winter.

Does the collar pop up and button in the front to protect your neck and face?

True dusters are pretty rare actually. A duster is a lightweight coat intended to be worn over clothing in dusty area to keep your clothes clean. Many coats advertised as dusters today would be either "slickers" or rain coats which are waterproof, or trenchcoats and great coats, which are designed to be warm. Dusters are neither waterproof nor warm.

LiveLearnCoach t1_izar2ot wrote

I would add a belt to it, to break the vertical line as well as add some shape to it. I will probably add loops to the cuffs for warmth and looking fancy.

That said, great catch, OP.

I had a shorter Belgian AF (blue) coat like that. Never lived anywhere where it got cold enough to wear. It weighed a ton.

zoefkris OP t1_izaxk4x wrote

I can button up the main flaps, on the collar there's a piece of cloth and a button on both sides but my neck is too short to allow it to make a proper fit

2

zoefkris OP t1_izaxwt5 wrote

It's apparently felt, boiled in a specific way to keep water out, it's heavy and you should make sure to wear something under it because it's like a tiny cactus, prickly.

Very nice! Lots of room for adjusting and venting for how warm or cold it is. Functional epaulets are handy, too.

We found a vintage US Navy coat for a Grandchild. The quality of these fabrics is remarkable.

Hers doesn't have that great detailing in the back, just one flat vent for walking.

She said that it is remarkably waterproof.

You found a good thing 👌

Edit: Thanks again for getting back to me.

I know it's nice, if you're ever looking for some more I've found that uniforms from the 1980's fit very well with these coats as long as they're solid colour and not camouflaged, let me see if I can find a picture demonstrating that

2

luesAyer t1_izb8anj wrote

It would be a boiled wool, google says its called frieze in english but im not sure, we call it vadmal in swedish. Its a heavy wool weave that has been boiled to be very sturdy and water resistant

I get it and I'll admit they're not the lightest coats but I personally like the weight, it adds character and a feeling of quality
