unless you have a legal issue with who owns the car, you should be able to simply register your car for the usual fees and get new stickers for your plate. you will need a valid inspection and current insurance as well as a clean title. there is no problem owning an unregistered vehicle, as long as it stays off the road till you re-register it. Lots of people store vehicles for many legal reasons. registration lapses all the time.

I don’t think you need a vehicle to be inspected to register it . However you do need it to be registered to inspect it .

GhostOfLords t1_jc691qj wrote

This is correct. All you need to register it is the previous registration, proof of insurance and the mileage.

Efi_befbi OP t1_jc61m5q wrote

No, I own the vehicle. I already have done an inspection. Would i need to do another one? Thank you for the information.

slade2501 t1_jc61p4b wrote

if the inspection sticker is current, you should be good to go.

NotAMainer t1_jc6cne3 wrote

You don't need a sticker to register it. The town doesn't care if you can't drive it if you're still willing to give them tax money for it.

You do need to have it registered to get inspected, however.

Good to hear.

I have a history of registering my vehicles up to several months late. The town or city clerk will not even question it. At 150 days expired, operating the vehicle becomes a criminal violation rather than a civil infraction. I’m fairly certain the practice, at least in Cumberland County, is to not arrest the driver solely for that offense anymore, and instead summons them to court. That’s more information than you wanted, but yeah, just register your car; you’ll be golden.

You don’t need a valid inspection. Registered my vehicle on Friday and didn’t need that proof.

If the car was not insured, your license may be suspended. This happened to me when I was on a medical treatment for 11 months so I couldn't drive. I was charged 35.00 to restore my license.

She then told me I could have avoided the 35 dollars had I only paid for the insurance the 11 months I couldn't drive, lol.

Sounds like your license expired while you weren’t using it.

2

fridaycat t1_jcnb6yz wrote

No, they told me it was suspended because I lapsed the insurance. The car was registered, they didn't know I wasn't driving it.

Majestic-Feedback541 t1_jc69lfl wrote

It will be registered. But registration will expire the same month as normal, not 12 months from today (or whatever day you get there).

11

eljefino t1_jc6qd43 wrote

Yup, the town wants its excise tax BAD. If you can go 12 months and a day though you'll get a fresh year when you re-register it.

Going 5 months or more expired is a class E fine, not a ticket, if you get caught driving it on the road.

edit, months

Majestic-Feedback541 t1_jc6qmi3 wrote

I really hope you meant 12 months lol 12 years between registration is a bit much.. someone had to of caught on at some point 😂

crypto_crypt_keeper t1_jc62o5x wrote

Yeah I've made it over a year before 😅 I might be the state record and believe it or not the reminder to register came from getting pulled over, they didn't tow ticket or arrest me. I got a warning, I registered like normal online that night. No new inspection needed since you did that already

I’m 62f, I’ve known people who didn’t register their vehicle for a considerable amount of months because they didn’t have the money, the town took their money and gave them stickers.

Lieutenant_Joe t1_jc68j10 wrote

Done this a few times, in two different towns. The only thing that will happen is that the clerk at the town office will raise her eyebrow at you, and maybe toss you a little snark.

Moonstonedbowie t1_jc68kdn wrote

You’ll be fine. Mine is always due in March, and in March 2020 I wasn’t doing much driving so it totally slipped my mind until I tried to get it inspected in October. I was able to renew the registration online, no issues.

3

ecco-domenica t1_jc6c21r wrote

I've done this before. No problem to register but you may not be able to do it online, only in person. And your annual registration period won't restart from today (like inspections do). You will still keep your original registration date for your next registration fee due and will be paying for the time you were unregistered.

3

Efi_befbi OP t1_jc6c6rt wrote

I see. Would i be able to pay for it over the phone? I live in MA currently due to school

1

ecco-domenica t1_jc6vkkw wrote

Best thing is to call your city/town office and find out. Some towns might accept credit cards and some may not. If they do, they can probably mail you the reg & tags.

1

[deleted] t1_jc6ktpp wrote

If it was previously registered, they still go by the registration month of the previous registration. So I registered my car 6 months late, and my new registration is only good for 6 months.

2

ppitm t1_jc6lt55 wrote

Were you paying for insurance that whole time?

2

Seyword t1_jc741gn wrote

You’ll be fine registering it but you’ll need to do it in person. If it was less than 6 months overdue you’d be able to do the fast version online and have the new stickers mailed to you.

2

RAP1958 t1_jc65hfi wrote

They will register it!

1

lsanborn t1_jc8a3vd wrote

I forgot mine for six months. They charged me half price because it would only be good for another six months. I didn’t argue, but I felt kind of guilty.

1

Dry-Persimmon-2234 t1_jc8f2uv wrote

Ride it out the full year the fine is typically cheaper then the registration. Otherwise your only covered for 3 months then you have to pay again

1

Dbgb4 t1_jc6b1wq wrote

I suspect you will be required to pay going backward to the last time was registered, and forward to the end of the current registration year.

professor_cheX t1_jc6iiii wrote

not much but if you end up sticking it out closer to a whole year, they might give you a discount (seriously). then just kick the can on next year as well.
