What rock have you been living under?

Yes, this has been in the news many times ever since the Legislature was seated in December of 2022. There have been multiple threads about it here on Reddit.

Don't spend it all in one place!

If you’re not tapped in to the internet all the time, easy enough to let it pass you by. I don’t have any TV services and am relatively mainstream-social media averse, and would probably have made it this far without finding out about the relief checks if I didn’t have the social circle I do.

Kudos for somehow avoiding the partisanship arguments and every other argument over these from folks in your community, I wish I were you!

Oh yeah. This is actually a scam going on.

I'm detective Frad Ulent of the FBI. Send the check to my address: 123 Legit Street, Portland, ME so I can review it for clues to see where it came from.

"Did anyone else know about this" is a bit of a rhetorical question.

That being said, you're an r/Maine n00b, so I'll let it slide. Welcome to our humble abode.

Umm, yeah. I don’t even live (qualify) in Maine and it’s literally all I’ve been hearing about. “Where’s my check” ?

The big hurdle is that governing bodies don't like losing territory. If we actually did try something like that, we'd have to fight the United States.

That's just not a battle I'm confident in winning

Because everyone else does know about it. It's been in the news for at least a month now, give or take. It's also been around this subreddit as a bit of a hot topic--but again, you just joined up here, and not everyone reads the news on the daily, so I didn't expect you to know that.

I do not know for sure, but my theory is that it’s based on the date you filed your state taxes last year (in other words, the earlier you filed the earlier you get your check). Basing this theory solely on the order in which my family members received them relative to when they filed their taxes (so, sample size of 3, lol).

It’s solely based on your 2021 reported income.

Eligible recipients are those who filed their 2021 Maine individual income tax return by October 31, 2022, are not claimed as a dependent on another’s return, and have earned a Federal adjusted gross income of less than:

$100,000 if filing single or if married and filing separately; $150,000 if filing as head of household; or $200,000 for couples filing jointly.

Did you receive the $850 check? It will be sent to same address.

https://portal.maine.gov/refundstatus/payment

You need to know line 14 of your 2021 tax refund. Maine updates Tuesdays and Fridays so you can check tonight and there may be an update in the morning.

Hope this helps.

Might be worth downloading one of the TV station or newspaper apps and have them send alerts to your phone-that way you’ll know stuff like this, weather etc-its hard to keep up when you’re right out straight…

Frequent-Mail8262 t1_j823972 wrote

Did you get the $850 check? If you did you shouldn’t have to worry or do anything but wait. 1st round of checks went out 1/31 and are now being received.

How did you file ? It takes less time to log in to most tax filing sites to grab your prior year taxes then it did to probably type what you did haha

Hope this helps!

https://portal.maine.gov/refundstatus/payment For when you do find the energy to get your agi the above link will give you answer or you can simply call the Maine tax people. They are not like calling the IRS lol

It’s great news, but keep your eyes open, because the feds might decide to tax it on your federal income tax. I think that’s still being worked out at the last minute.

You're a bad person for being a dick to someone for no other reason than you can be. I may not be as "informed" as you, but I at least know how to be respectful.

Edit: judging me based on a self-depreciating joke doesn't make you sound as smart as you think it does.

Since it's been in the news via all outlets (tv, radio, newspapers, on-line news, bulletins, notices, water cooler talk and everything else) since last fall; yes, we knew. Everyone who received at $850 relief check automatically qualiflied and there will be others who also qualify. If you don't want or need yours, Catholic Charities and other organizations provide emergency heating assistance to needy folks. HEAP assistance is slow and cumbersome to get and is often not enough to get a family through a cold winter (not disparaging HEAP, just stating how it is). They try, but don't have the staff or resources to be efficient. Other charities buy the fuel directly and have it delivered to needy families and can do it very quickly. Just a thought, in case you (or anyone else who didn't know about the $450) don't need it for fuel this winter.

Only if you set up mail forwarding with the post office. Otherwise you can contact the state to change the address. There's a link floating around in some other comments that should tell you how to go about that.

Albitt t1_j89b3rb wrote

Oh I didn’t know I had to set up forwarding. I changed my address and all and just assumed that they forward anything after I changed it. At least that’s how it’s worked before. My check was sent out on the 3rd and I still don’t have it. So I might need to call.
