If you like that one then maybe suggest taking RT 15 north out of Williamsport. Should be "the future I-99 corridor". Well at least once PennDot gets a high speed interchange figured out on and off of I-80.

I would have to agree. Where 70 comes into pa at the md line and goes over the mountain to breezewood is nice too. There is a ton of nice scenery over that way.

Yes, north Lycoming County is very mountainous and the highway cuts through the mountains. Route 120 from Lock Haven to Renovo is known as the Bucktail Scenic Byway and winds along the mountains.

While not an interstate, US-6 between Scranton and Carbondale on the Casey Highway has absolutely gorgeous views of the Pocono Mountains and the Lackawanna Valley.

I81 from Scranton north to the state line is pretty. While not in PA I86 from Elmira to Erie is just north of the border and has beautiful scenery including great views of Chautauqua lake from a nice eastbound rest area.

81 to 84 has always been my favorite when heading north to Massachusetts. It is not as frequented as a GPS won’t naturally route you that way most of the time, so it doesn’t tend to be very congested.

15 (kinda I-99) north of Williamsport. I drive it back and forth probably 3 times a month and haven’t gotten tired of it yet.

Fave that is actually an interstate would be 476 north of the tunnel. 99 is also great. Because I don't live there and drive it maybe once every few years, the highways through downtown Pittsburgh are visually impressive and I don't mind the traffic. I'd probably be more jaded and dock more points for congestion if I drove them daily. Great non-interstates but still main highways include 322 Harrisburg to State College, US-6 for almost its entirety across the state.

Those are definitely some PA highlights. 376 coming eastbound into Pittsburgh is so killer through the tunnel. After being a life king Philly resident and recently moving to Pittsburgh, I will never complain about the congestion here, it doesn’t even come close to the Philly nightmare.

118 between Dallas and Hughesville, especially where you cut into the southern part of Ricketts Glen. I used to live in Forty Fort and go to school/work in Wilpo so would take cross valley up to Dallas, go past Hillside Farms and PSU-Lehman, and then join up to 118 to go to school. Beautiful drive in every season though sometimes skipped during the worst parts of winter.

The Cabin, next to the bridge going into Duncannon and Fantasy Island, the tacky pastel color place are gone. Both the "adult shops" seem to be open as well as the club on the east bound lane (forget the name). Also, Athena, the "legitimate massage place" seems to be open, but on life support. My wife and i used to have a contest to see if the employees were hanging outside smoking. That hasn't hairbrush since we'll before the pandemic.

Many of the central PA clubs are boarded up. The one on 15 in Port Treverton closed a few years back. I'm guessing a combo of covid restrictions and it was probably hard getting PPP for self employed contractors (their dancers) as well as the amount of MAGAs that became "evangelical, saved Christians" cut into their customer base.

PennDOT should be beginning work on the high speed interchange onto I-80 the Bellefonte exit within the next year or two. The first part of that project was building a new exit for PA-26/Jacksonville Rd, which was completed within the last couple of months. As for the high speed interchange off of I-80 ... Can't say I know what the solution is there.

I agree with you about 99 being pretty, but also as a longtime State College resident it’s known as an accident-laden, chaotic traffic hell hole.

I like that stretch of 99, and also Rt 15/I 99 between Williamsport and Mansfield is pretty awesome (near my hometown Wellsboro). Also for a non-highway road, 287 from Wellsboro to Jersey Shore is dope.

wheresaldopa t1_j5kytfy wrote

I-99 from State College to Altoona is only rivaled for scenery by I-70 from Breezewood to the Mason Dixon Line. Even then, it is not much of a contest as I-99 has mostly unobstructed views of the valley below unlike I-70. Some of my favorite drives have been southbound on I-99 on a clear day when the morning fog has yet to subside from the valley below. On those days, it genuinely looks like you are on a floating landmass in the sky.

Since others are also including non-Interstate divided highways in this thread, I will also mention US-219 from Ebensburg to Meyersdale, which has its fair share of stunning views as well. It is a bit under the radar given that it is not the most frequently traveled of roads in the state, and, to be honest, I have no idea why it is a four lane divided highway to begin with. But, it is a very pretty drive nonetheless, especially in the fall, and I love driving that stretch on my way to the Youghiogheny River watershed for my leisurely sojourns with the river.

I-78. Have done the drive so many times from Allentown to Harrisburg area and there is enough variety to keep me going. Whether the farmland, warehouses, that guy from New York in the left lane going 65, the lady from Virginia going 105 and doesn't matter who's what and where...still going 105, and that trucker duking it out with the other trucker on the small rolly hills...only to be full weight and cannot go uphill; makes the slower trucker catch up. It improves my driving awareness skills and I love it. Sadly, the trips to Allentown are likely going to dwindle down next year. But trips to Shartlesville will be the same.

As a whole, maybe I-176, it’s relatively empty of traffic. I-276 is probably the most well built interstate as a whole.

For individual sections, agree with 99 between Tyrone and State College. 81 between 78 and 80 can be pretty especially in the fall. 376 EB has the most dramatic entrance out of the Fort Pitt Tunnel. 76 between Carlisle and Breezewood can be scenic. I kind of like 80 between Clearfield and Milesburg too.

If we’re cheating with non-Interstate freeways, also agree US 15 north of Williamsport and US 322 between Potters Mills and Harrisburg are some of the best road scenery in the state. US 11/15 North between Duncannon and Selinsgrove has some nice river views in the morning. US 222 North has some nice views of Reading from afar too. And I love US 30 crossing the Susquehanna.
