Like many others have said, it feels like these new GPU were designed for mining rigs. They’re just too big to fit inside many normal cases.

If you’re just playing video games, stop buying a new card every 1-2 years. The higher end cards should last you 3-4 years.

I’d rather they didn’t explode.

Even more if you don't rage about every single fps. I just upgraded after 7 years from rx480 8gb (still able to run games like RE:8 in playable quality) to 3080ti and i don't plan touching that setup for next 5 at least

My 980ti went from 2015 to 2020 playing all games in mostly maxed settings except some in 2020 that recommended 1080. I have a 3080 now so I don’t see any need to get a newer card till 2025 unless something big happens.

If you managed to get a 3080/3080ti then you can get way more years out of that card than 3/4 unless you're playing some heavy VR stuff, games demands have not gone up significantly like they used to, you only need the new cards if you are one of those "all ultra 8K 240hz" type of gamers or if you stream/play heavy VR games i guess

It’s crazy that this and for example not having to upgrade your phone every year has to be even mentioned. These companies have managed to create such a huge FOMO to some people that they can’t live without having the newest thing every second of their life.

More than that honestly. I was rocking a 1070 literally till this year when a friend offered to trade for his 3070 plus 300 cause he thought it was overkill for overwatch and needed some pocket money. If you have 8 gigs of vram you can still run basically anything these days as long as you are willing to lower settings. An RX 480 can fit that criteria

As a minor the reason why i hate the 40xx series and would not touch them, nearly hated the 3xxx series for the same reason. No one wants to use Nvidia funny adapters. Even in mining rigs those adapters are horribly dangerous. If anything all the design aspects of this card they put in place was to deter miners.

We don't want huge spacious rigs, we want small compact small footprint stuff.

Wana know why no one has MSI areo 3090 cards?

2060 - the laptop’s battery has died, the headphone jack doesn’t work, the power cord is frayed, the screen casing near the hinge has cracked

But I have no complaints with the graphics card.

We will see when its actually out... The RDNA3 is a "beta" on launch and i will be shocked if its in a decent enough state sooner then end of 2023. All I know about AMD cards is from a buddy of mine that has the 6700 and he was complaining alot about the drivers and software. There is nvidia the absolute king.

Same. 4790k and a 1080ti. Currently planning on a new build and so far leaning amd on the GPU. Waiting for real world benchmarks to make that decision.

My 1080Ti is still going strong after like 5 or 6 years. I'm not really looking into upgrading for another 3 years. My CPU needed a updated before the gpu lol.

I don't expect them to ever become mainstream, because they provide no real value.

8K TVs have been around for years and there is still nobody even talking about making content for them, because even with 20/20 vision you can't see the difference at any reasonable sitting distance.

I'm so tired of Nvidia, they've been increasingly anti consumer with every new GPU that comes out. I'll just get AMD at this point

Oh sorry. I meant anything over 1080p resolution. Of course it will run in any monitor. I rocked my 1080ti until last year when I couldn’t run games at 1440p good enough ( I have one 1440p and one 4k monitor). It was just just not good enough for newer games at 2k.

A lot of high refresh rate ultrawide monitors can made use of the power too. And there's the 360Hz 1440p monitors too, but that seems somewhat pointless imo.

The size isn't down to putting off miners though. If it was the partners producing cards would be using smaller heatsinks but they're forced to use massive ones because of the power draw and heat output.

Though I suppose it's possible that Nvidia have forced them to use larger heatsinks though. They're not known for treating partners well hence the EVGA situation.

kadinshino t1_ivq6rv2 wrote

oh size is a huge off put. maybe not to the hobby mining or home miner. But let me tell you when you have 100+ gpus....space adds up very fast. and with dual and triple slot cards and now quadslot..... I'm good.

also, miners don't push the OCs on these cards. we power limit them to a bare minimum.

the reason why partner cards were so much more popular was that it was easier to adapt to the normal 6 or 8pin we had been using forever..

Serious miners tried to dump their FE cards asap. Poor cooling poor performance.

This is in part why the CMP cards were developed. High power amper chips in a dual-slot design.

lepobz t1_ivq8f1h wrote

I heard a rumour there’s a card that has similar performance to a 4080 but drinks half the juice and is half the size.

Heheheheheheh.

Lenovo Legion Y540.

It's about three years old. Battery still works, just only lasts about 20 minutes when not plugged in.

The cracked screen casing is from when I dropped it a short distance -- no damage to the screen itself.

Stiryx t1_ivrugm0 wrote

I upgraded from a 1080ti to a 3070ti because it cost me less than $200 after I sold my old card.

Ray tracing is really nice but the performance leap is actually kinda disappointing, 50% or so. Not life changing that’s for sure.
