Also, I might be misunderstanding this part:

I use the same app for my bus and light rail tickets. The MTA is operated in a different state, so. But I also use a metro card on the PATH.

Anyway, not every city is for everyone. You don't have to live here and I hope you find a place that fits your needs.

Everyone in Jersey City knows you have to Uber to the airport, knows how to travel on the public transit here (one payment method for NJ only transit operated by NJ transit and another one for the PATH operated by port authority since it's in two states, not really that complicated), and knows construction is booming in journal square. Five years ago you would have been saying that about downtown. But thanks for the tips.

It would have been nice to hear where op is coming from because the airport comment sent me. Ever tried living in one of the 5 boroughs and getting to JFK or LGA? (Especially if you don't live in the same borough as the airport)?

I will say JC grew on me after living here, so I generally wonder how effective a quick visit is to judging what living in a place will be like. Or, at least one needs to go into the visit knowing the tips and tricks that people who live there know.

Ah yes, tent cities all over town but at least you can get to the airport easily. Also if you want to go literally anywhere outside of the city. Good luck doing that without a car. Here you could get to the Jersey shore beaches, Long Island, beaches, hiking in the Hudson valley, Boston, DC and Philly, all without a car.

Never mind the fact that you can get to three major airports from Jersey City in under an hour representing, hubs of many major airlines in this country. Two of which are international.

Typical JC resident weekend:

Go from/to the airport for some reason.

Ride the bus-light rail-PATH-MTA circuit to qualify for the INDY 100.

Hit all four corners of the city, wondering why the whole city isn’t a natural preserve (WHY IS THIS CITY SO BIG?).

Scoff that poors aren’t banished to Staten Island.

Be angry at all the residential construction while Denver, SF, Oakland, LA, Portland, Seattle, Austin, and every other growing city have none.

As someone who lived in the City* of Chicago for 18 years, traveling at least 1-2 times a year through MDW and ORD if not more, JC to EWR has always been faster and cheaper via Uber. (Separately, I think the security at EWR is also faster). Not to mention even licensed taxis in Chicago have tried to rip me off in terms of fare.

*Differentiating here from a suburb that happens to be near the airport. City proper.

I think the Chicago comparison is missing info because Chicago covers quite a large area. Vast majority of places in Chicago will be much longer to the airport compared to JC/EWR

JC needs more green spaces for sure and also has amazing natural spaces that people fight for every day.

many of us who live here don’t live here just to enjoy the hard-earned benefits of a great place, we work hard to improve our community AND enjoy what’s great already. (And bitch about the problems)

Security at EWR is by far the fastest out of every airport I've been to. Everything is seamless. I'm not exactly a world traveler and I'm sure there's better out there, but I've been to at least twenty airports in this country and half a dozen international ones.

Just wanna say I moved to JC last spring and I love here. I was able to quickly able to figure out the bus to get where I need to go and the light rail. If you download the moovit app that will help you figure how to get places via NJ Transit. Also use the app to buy your ticket.

Two points on transit:

  • NYC is known for having really crappy and indirect public transit connections to all three of its airports. It’s hard to go anywhere on transit from any one of them. Jersey City is comparatively better just because it’s a more affordable taxi/Uber ride from Newark.
  • A huge majority of Jersey City (and really all of North Jersey) transit traffic has the sole purpose of getting into and out of Manhattan. Trains, PATH, Light Rail, etc. aren’t meant to get you “around town”
