Or have you also just given up?
You can’t change a persons mind. They must change it on their own.
Funny, sad, and true!
Yes true, but you you can give them the tools they need to make the change!
At this point, either you're going to believe the science, or you won't. I've given up trying to have the conversation.
It is now known as climate change, not global warming. It's not just warming up temps, but it is leading to more severe, and erratic weather. Storms will become much more intense, more frequent, and less predictable. There are going to be more precepitation in some areas, less in others. This is going to have long term problems for the hability of the planet for humans. The Earth will be fine, but it will be a lot tougher for the humans living there. We've already started to see the impact, and the ride is going to get bumpier. So hang on.
If they aren't staunch science deniers, just show them several recent articles on Climate Change. Scientists expect the polar ice caps to melt by 2030 if we don't revert our course...
There's a lot of layers of denial.
There's been a lot of resources spent convincing people not to stop the petroleum industry's gravy train. You can't expect to fight that alone and win everytime.
You are correct about the too late to stop. Even if we stopped all pollution right now, it would still get worse for 50-100 years. Things take time to pass. If you stopped eating junk food, it would take time for the effects of it to leave your body. The earth is the same way. As far as OP is concerned, skiing will be almost non existant within the next 100 years even with copious amounts of snowmaking. Enjoy it while you can.
As a skier, snowmobiler, ice skater; how in the world would someone participating in these activities not see climate change?? The ski season gets 5 days shorter every year, ice skating on lakes is rarely safe these days. Snowmobiling is almost almost actually dead in this region. It's kinda devastating. Just 10 years ago rocked. Climate scientists said new England has 15-20 years of skiable climate left, seeming more like 10-15 or less :(
Ask them how this season is going for them, with the temps this weekend forecast to be in the 50s
If they do all those activities and deny climate change, then it’s likely they will never change their mind; either due to ignorance or arrogance.
The change over the last 10 years is drastic and glaringly obvious. There are now multiple days each winter month where the temp hits 50-60. Almost every ski resort south of the Whites now rely almost entirely on man made snow. There is basically no snowmobiling in the southern half of the state unless there is a decent snow storm, and even then, its going to melt quickly. The evidence has been clear and obvious for quite sometime.
My dad has worked with an organization who works with people that conventionally deny climate change. They work with people like farmers and ranchers; people who have a working connection to their environment. Their approach is to starrt by asking them if they have noticed changes over the past years/decades. Overwhelmingly they get “yes” as an answer with examples. Don’t try to argue it on a macro level, try individual experiences and see how much you can get them to extrapolate from there.
one of my husbands old jokes is that we don't need to save up for a vacation home, just have to wait 30 years and we'll be living in New Caribbean
> How do you convince someone who utilizes NH's cold weather recreational activities (ice fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, etc.) to become more concerned about the shifting climate?
I think your entire premise is wrong. Unless I misunderstand, you're suggesting that you can appeal to them based on their selfishness, however none of the proposed actions are predicted to lower temperatures, only slow the rise in temperature. Certainly this is true of any effects of the proposals within the lifetime of the person you'd be speaking with today.
So why would it matter to them? You're appealing to their selfishness and then asking them to accept changes that won't benefit them which I don't think would work very well.
Analogy: imagine trying to get the patient recently diagnosed with untreatable, un-operable stage IV lung cancer to stop smoking. Why would they? The damage is done, their fate is sealed, and quitting smoking would only take away from what little pleasure they have left.
Are you riding your bike to work and not heating your home?
Climate only affects people.
People are selfish and aren't good at extrapolation 2nd/3rd/etc. order repercussions, or scale up their thinking to big stuff.
People will suffer, but the planet will be fine.
We might see short-term increases in temperature, but that just leads to frozen fresh water (ice) melting into the oceans, which will likely disrupt the deep currents by changing the salinity of the currents. This will likely lead to a big drop in temperatures in North America.
In the end we'll be able to ski and ice fish year-round.
That is the only right answer.
It's going to be 60 in January... Think about that haha
You forgot to throw in the shifting of the poles. Joking and not joking on this one…
I remember ice skating on local ponds and lakes as soon as the temps dropped below freezing. They wouldn’t get a chance to thaw; just freeze deeper. Now they almost never freeze deep enough. They hardly freeze at all.
You convince them by leading by example. Stop buying Chinese shit. They are the worst offenders by a wide margin. If you’re buying Chinese made products, you are 100% guilty of contributing to global warming.
With the 60 degree weather on the way I think they might not at all this winter
Well if it's real then you'd think they'd see it. How can you not see the climate? But perhaps the issue here is that they HAVE seen it. In the 1960s to 70s there was a cooling trend. Certain scientists, politicians, and journalists panicked over that, too. We were all going to freeze to death. People wanted to have planes fly over the poles and cover them with dark dust in order to melt ice. Yeah- Got to melt the ice caps before we all freeze to death. -promoted by some of the same people who now say warming. I find it interesting that the cure back then was the same for the opposite problem. Look it up. Takes a little work because it was before the internet. Or you can just believe what the media tells you. It's easier. I'll give you that.
They shall find out this weekend.
Maybe that's because science IS denial? You try to falsify your own hypothesis.
waitwut? What part of the scientific method says believe it? I only see skepticism.
I mean, the human race is pretty much f*cked at this point.
The Earth will be fine, just give it a few thousand years after we're gone.
It's pretty great, not going to lie. I hate shoveling snow.
Yeah I'm not mad haha. I keep asking the wife to move south because I hate the snow. I stay here and the south comes to me. Also I got a new and bigger snow blower this year so you're welcome
Science is skeptical.
Until it’s called something else to further push what limited data we have as an overall agenda that remains unknown by the great number of humans who occupy the earth.
This place is many many thousands of years old (or so we’re told) and yet our “change” data is based upon 100+/- years. Imagine our surprise if/when the earth experiences a deep freeze after we’ve dedicated endless efforts to reverse near term warming (changing) when the earth, all along, was swinging between hot, cold, hot, cold.
Climate facts. People facts. Planet facts.
The key words in your argument are “might” and “likely”…science plays a role, proving or disproving such hypotheses.
I predict…the USA continues to pay China to make shtuff for less than what we can/will make ourselves and, as a result of this to coincide with the USA’s newfound interest in worldly climate matters, will contribute even more money to bringing such 3rd world countries up to a cleaner and greener standard of manufacturing. Less is more. More is less. USA! USA!! USA!!!
Change is inevitable. Nothing stays the same. We may look back on all this talk one day and chuckle…while wearing flip flops all year long or bundled up in a parka for 9 months of the year. Nobody knows. Not even the scientists.
You are some type of something
More than you know.
Perhaps, but if the rate of change doesn't alarm you then we are going to diaagree.
It’s not as big a concern for me as how crooked our govt is, including these energy-laden deals we’re entered into to the detriment of many (and the benefit of a few elitists).
There are two main reasons why China can make things so much cheaper than we can. First, they don’t have labor laws. The working conditions there are inhumane and their wages are atrocious, in some cases, literally slave labor. The second reason is because they have no environmental laws. When you don’t have to spend money to dispose of your pollutants properly, you can make things at a much lower cost. They just dump their pollutants in the ocean. Same thing with their air pollutants as well. Basically, corporations send their products to China so that they can destroy the environment out of consumers’ sights and cut costs. It’s all a sham
You start by first trying something easier like convincing them to change their religion.
Word. To the infinite power.
You are going to get alot of down votes.

>Stop buying Chinese shit. They are the worst offenders by a wide margin.
Pssst! Your sinophobia is showing! Are you really blaming PoC for Climate Change?
“Your sinophobia is showing!”
How dare you not capitalize Sinophobia! What are you, some kind of patriarchal binary white supremacist??!! Do you think Chinese people are beneath you and are undeserving of the simple respect of capitalization? I’m simply appalled at the nonchalance of your ingrained bigotry. Excuse me while I find my safe space and take a few minutes to collect myself. Your bigotry just broke my heart 💔💔💔
Those kinds of doomer statements are just not helpful IMO. They estimate Boston will have the former climate of DC by 2035. But there are ski areas in the mid-Atlantic.
Furthermore, I strongly believe humans will be extinct before Tucks isn’t skiable in the spring.
Wisdom and facts, preach!
George Carlin said and I’ll paraphrase: “the earth will just shake us off like a bad case of fleas”
Not sure why this is being downvoted.
The time to do something about climate change has come and gone...
We had the technology to start reducing our impact on the atmosphere 50+ years ago, but instead we chose to continue funneling money into the pockets of oil and coal executives. There was money to be made in new, cleaner energy methods, but they refused to adapt.
Even if we made a 180 in our behavior tomorrow, the consequences of our past would last for generations and humans would still be struggling to survive.
It's grim, but that doesn't make it false.
The science on Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation shutdown happening is a bit iffy, not in that it is bad science, but rather that it requires a pretty specific set of circumstances, a meltwater pulse at just the right time, that isn't that likely to happen, with global warming. Way more likely to happen is a slight weakening in the circulation, which just slows the rate of warming for a few years. Anyways, North America would not be that heavily affected, it would be the western shore of Europe that would face the bulk of the effects.
It definitely wouldn't kickstart the next ice age, if that is what you are implying. The Younger Dryas occurred with a much weaker Milankovitch forcing, kicking off an feedback loop of cooling temperatures is more or less impossible even if the AMOC shuts down completely under current conditions. Worst case scenario for an AMOC shutdown is temperatures dropping in the UK and the Norwegian coast by up to 10 degrees, elsewhere in Europe by less than half that, and not really affecting North America much as prevailing weather patterns are from the west here. It definitely would not stop global warming.
