The interchange between 1&9, 22, 21, 78 and the turnpike should fill you with delight, then. I add 4 miles to my trip because I need to follow their roundabout to avoid a roundabout.

It is so confusing. I fly in a couple times a year. I need to head west on 78 and I swear I’m going in every possible direction before I get to 78 and then there’s a sudden left exit-only down to Newark. I’ve done that a few times also.

_Dihydrogen_Monoxide t1_j9r5jpn wrote
I’ve done that before but in this case it would’ve been particularly annoying to park at C only to arrive at A and then still have to take the airtrain. The extra cost would have been for nothing.
Boring_Athlete9618 t1_j9pnncu wrote
EWR website shows their IS a walkable connection. So two options 1) via bus shuttles and 2) a walkway via terminal A garage and a “covered exterior walkway” and one elevator/ escalator. Will have to see how much of a pain that is. They have to replace the air train anyway as it doesn’t connect to long term parking and they’ve know that for a while.
Boring_Athlete9618 t1_j9q0ofs wrote

strongarms3 t1_j9qm8dt wrote
This. There is a walkable connection. Take the AirTran to the old P3 stop, which is now the terminal A stop. There is a 10 minutes walk to Terminal A that is super easy.
css555 OP t1_j9ov6af wrote
The Port Authority spent 2.7 Billion dollars for a new Terminal A, yet did not include an AirTrain connection. It’s either a long walk from the station to the terminal, or a shuttle bus. Real fun with luggage. And unnecessary extra time for your trip.
The red line shows schematically how short of a rail connection it would have been. I think I read that they didn't do a connection now because they are replacing the entire AirTrain system. But that’s no comfort for all the passengers stuck with this situation for several more years. An unbelievably short-sighted design.

That's an old picture. A-1 is demolished and flattened. The AirTrain project is next up on the list, after the other two banjo's (A-2 & A-3) are demolished - which is in progress right now. Once that work is done, the rest of the gates will open up (Phase 2). The AirTrain's maintenance shed is where you see "Bombardier Transportation (that is a spur off the main line) and the PA wasn't going to run the new line from there. So you would either take a bus or walk to the P1 station (where the rental cars are presently at - CONRAC will be fully open during Phase 2) The design for the new Terminal A has an extension that will connect with the new Terminal B (which will be a whole new building) in the future. This situation with the AirTrain will be a ongoing situation, as more busses will shuttle passengers between Terminals (Landside) and passengers (Airside). Bottom line: once the new AirTrain is done, it will be a easy - right in front station. But that will be a few years coming since I don't know how long the AirTrain project will take. The new Terminal B is in the pipeline as well. We'll have to bear with for a while.
vocabularylessons t1_j9se3rv wrote
A major challenge with the new AirTrain project (which is in progress) is that the Port Authority doesn't own much of the land where the new train will be. It's owned by various private entities who all have incentive to not play nice/reasonable in the purchase and land of the needed land.
storm2k t1_j9p7mcy wrote

Pro tip:
Until the AirTrain replacement, if you’re coming to EWR via transit, use the NJTransit #62 bus from either Elizabeth or Newark Penn train stations, or the #go28 from Newark Broad St.
They stop at all terminals (right outside), operate basically 24/7, and are cheaper than the access fee that Port Authority charges to Airtrain users.
And they’re faster to the terminals than the train + Airtrain + shuttle bus/walk combo.
It’s my opinion that the NEC heavy rail line should go directly under the airport terminal area (like any modern airport in Europe), or at least extend the PATH (both of these options were disincentivized until recently by federal policy), but until then, this is what we’ve got.
But hey, at least they touted the wide arrival/departure car lanes, that’s totally an easy and spatially compact way for thousands of people to arrive. /s
riellograndma t1_j9pajzu wrote
That’s funny. I just took 62 to get to the airport. I live near Newark so it was only $3 to get to the airport. I will say it’s not for the faint of heart. That shit was overpacked
remarkability t1_j9ph4uu wrote
look at that: frequent, relatively cheap service is what a lot of people want.
That route could totally support 6-12 min frequencies, especially during all this terminal/Airtrain construction.
riellograndma t1_j9pkd6s wrote
Ha..your telling me. Have you ever taken the GO28 route as well? Apparently it is similar to the 62 route but more geared towards those that are flying. I’ll continue taking the 62 tho if I’m traveling alone
remarkability t1_j9pzesh wrote
pros:
go28 is the better choice if you’re coming from along Bloomfield Ave (south of the Bloomfield station), connecting via the MOBO/M&E at Bloomfield/Broad St, or via the NLR at Bloomfield Ave/Broad St.
Luggage storage area and racks, different seating arrangement
It also is a decent choice if you are connecting at the EWR North Area from the #107 bus from NYC, or if you’re parking at P6. (You’d actually take the go28 towards Newark/Bloomfield)
Doesn’t get stuck in Elizabeth traffic (because it doesn’t go there), has traffic signal priority along Bloomfield Ave
cons:
It doesn’t touch Newark Penn (it runs down Broad St), so isn’t as helpful for NEC/NJCL/RVL, or any local buses which terminate there. 62 is way better at that.
It doesn’t run to Elizabeth or IKEA (less helpful for people connecting south of EWR)
It has wider stop spacing, so you might need to walk a bit more if by Bloomfield Ave.
Schedule got changed away from clockface (35m intervals instead of 15/30m) because it takes so long to get to and from the new terminal A.
peter-doubt t1_j9q3no9 wrote

Fun fact: They didnt build a connection between the new terminal toad and the old one, so the bus basically goes to A, then leaves the airport, loops around, and enters again to reach B
remarkability t1_j9pbeb7 wrote
Oh I know, the bus route looks like spaghetti.
I really hope that will be addressed when the new terminal Two gets built (even with just a bus-only connection) but knowing how they’re proposing connecting the new Airtrain with old B/C (1.5 mile long passageways), it’s clear that people not arriving via taxi are basically ignored.
And the AirTrain won’t even extend to the employee parking area, for the people who go to the airport every single day.
