Where do I live??

I just moved to Atlantic Highlands from out of state and I’m wondering, what “region” of Jersey do I live in? People from Cherry Hill tell me Central Jersey doesn’t exist, my friend from Ocean says I live in the shore area, on a map it feels north and central. Help? Also while you’re here, is it literally pronounced “cheese-quake”?

Born and raised and still living in the area- I describe it as CNJ or the North Jersey Shore, personally. Welcome! I think our corner of the state is one of the nicest.

Lol welcome to NJ! There is no objective answer to your question. We here have a revered tradition of endlessly debating north vs south and whether central exists (it does) and if so what it is. Soon it will be time for your coming of Jersey baptism, to choose sides in the pork roll vs Taylor ham debate. Good luck and don't choose the wrong one!

That's pork roll territory I think. But yeah, It's NYC Metro, Raritan Bay. By sandy hook AKA Northern Jersey shore aka North Jersey Coast Rail line. AKA route 36 traffic sucks

maybe but the section from perth amboy to sandy hook is known as the bay shore as well. if you drive on 36 there's "bay shore deli" and "bay shore ford" and whatnot

Central / jersey shore. Depending on where exactly in highlands could straight up be called jersey shore. The inlet has its own bay and a small public beach for Atlantic highlands right next to Sandy hook so I’d absolutely consider that jersey shore. The stretch of highway leading to Middletown is more “central jersey” so you could say both.

Yes it’s pronounced cheese-quake.

My friend lives in Atlantic Highlands. He’s born and raised NJ (just to clarify, not a transplant) and refers to it as central.

I live on the west coast and was talking to someone I met in a bar who was from NJ. I mentioned “central jersey” and he looked me dead in the eyes and said “there’s no such thing as central New Jersey” lol.

Okay, I was born in NJ and lived here all my 67 years and don't know any better place. You live in Central Jersey. which does not exist, at the northern end of the shore where people who don't have Easy Path go when they don't have exact change for more tolls. The dividing lines are Rt. 78 and 195.

But to real NJ history buffs you live in East Jersey.

It is pronounced Cheese Quake. Now, go visit the Twin Lights and grab a THEC on the way home.

Central Jersey falls between 78 and 195. So if you want to talk North, Central, or South, you're in Central Jersey.

Talking to people from NJ, you'd say you're from the Highlands, which people will immediately know. If you're talking about where you live to people from out of the area, I'd say something like "The central coast of NJ on the bay, about an hour on the ferry to NYC"

They are just being stubborn. Central Jersey is a thing. Arguing about it is a meme now. It used to be much more rural, has been undergoing a population boom for a few decades and now has its own identity. Same story throughout history.

Same reason why children throws tantrums. To seek your attention. Central Jersey has two of NJ's best colleges (Princeton and Rutgers) A great mix of diversity without crazy rachetness. Entertainment, Food, culture, malls, nature, and still have room to spread stretch out. You also get a little bit of both North and South Jersey culture in one spot... when you are complete, there's no sense of jealousy or seek attention for it. We just sit back and be content. Everyone knows who we are even out of staters. We made a name for ourselves and it's CNJ.

If they live in Atlantic Highlands then they wouldn’t say they are crime Highlands. Two different towns, and AH people don’t like being associated with Highlands people.

I mentally divide the state into Western, North, Central, South, and the Shore. I'd put Atlantic Highlands in the Jersey Shore category.

I’ve lived in AH for several years, and in my experience, North Jersey Shore seems to work best. It fits the coastal character of the community and isn’t as vague as just “central.”

people will say you live by the shore but its called the beach. literally no one who grew up by the beach calls it the shore.

From my lifetime of New Jersey living you are in the middle of Central New Jersey. Another entry said you were at the northern point of the shore region and I would have to agree with that too.

towards the shore we say in north Jersey, or even down the shore. anyway we jealous.

ETA, seems this is misunderstood, North Jersey calls it the shore, on the way down the shore.

Welcome to the neighborhood, you are in central Jersey! Atlantic Highlands is small but has all the best food. Kunya Siam has ruined us for any other Thai food. Cheesequake is said like it’s spelled, but a bastardized version of the Lenape language. Yup, lived in the area all my life, as me anything.
