Thrift store. Usually can find plenty of things there, in decent condition.

If you don't mind having hoodies/pullovers with random company logos on them you can find lots of things that are basically new.

The Red, White, & Blue thrift stores (Beechview-ish and Avalon) have a ton of jackets. I’ve found 2 different high-end snowboard jackets for like $8

They have a really large collection and good sales

Also try Thriftique in Lawrenceville. Stuff is usually in really good shape there. FWIW, a hoodie won't be enough once winter really starts.

if you live in EL area there is a thrift called Clothes Minded that is a really great shop. it won’t be bargain priced but they curate (generally) quality brands and garments. expect to pay 30-50 for nice jackets pants etc as opposed to like $10 or whatever at a goodwill type store

But also go to the thrift stores that support specific causes. People tend to give nicer stuff there since it's "for a cause" specifically. I have found great, affordable stuff there.

If you're able, check out the Lawrenceville and South Side locations, they have a much bigger selection. Lawrenceville is usually the cheapest of the three

You're not far from the Lawrenceville GW either, which has a larger selection in my experience.

If you're up for a short drive I suggest the Community Thrift on Babcock, it's always got a wide selection.

Would also recommend checking sites like poshmark and mercari. The RealReal carries brand-name secondhand items and I’ve seen Columbia, North Face, etc on there in great condition for cheap.

If you don’t have membership, they carry 32 degrees brand. You can purchase great quality, warm clothes on the company website too.

I came here to say Costco. If you are fortunate enough to afford the membership, or if you have a friend with a membership, you can find full, heavy duty, name brand outdoor gear for like $120. I got -40 winter boots for like $35 one year. You can get a pack of winter wool socks for $7. I got a waterproof winter weather system coat for like $45 a few years back. Underwear, lined pants, balaclavas and gloves are all there.

The Columbia store at Tanger outlets usually has some pretty good sales/deals. It's a little more pricey, but like I said they usually have great sales. I also bought my winter jacket there in 2013 and still use it every year without any wear/tear

Good suggestion. I bought a really nice winter jacket a year or two at the one in Grove City for a decent price. It's a two piece, so I can remove the fleece liner and wear as a jacket in the fall/spring.

Stop out to "Going, Going, Gone!" in Monroeville. It's Dick's Sporting Goods outlet. They don't sell junk there and it's priced very well. And I have had luck with finding extended sizes there too (xxl and larger).

I work outside in the winter. You need layers. Go to goodwill and find a thick wool sweater. Long sleeve shirt, wool sweater, flannel and a hoody will get you through just about everything. Sweats under pants and some good wool socks too. If you’re looking for a cheap but good coat try Gabriel brothers.

Layers. A basic loose fitting rain jacket and a fleece underneath will keep you comfortable for most of winter.

If you're looking to stay around $50, you should hit thrift stores for sure.

Beyond that, learn to layer for sure. You can stay warm without breaking the bank by grabbing a 3 or 5 pack of decent undershirts at target, grabbing some sweaters and hoodies at the thrift store, and if you see a light-medium pull over jacket you like, grab that too.

If you still have some budget left, get a decent pair of gloves (leather or synthetic material with a nice liner is best, cloth ones just get wet and will leave you colder), a hat that covers your ears, and a scarf.

Edit: also if you or a friend have a Costco membership, I'm super impressed and surprised by the quality of the fall/winter wear. Really nice stuff

That’s the second mention of Costco, I’ll definitely have to give that a look. I have a membership but it’s usually out of the way. They have online shopping but it’s not always reflective of what’s in stores so I think making a trip is definitely the way to go. Thanks

I’ve had pretty good luck buying no-name-brand stuff on Amazon. I just type in the specific thing I’m looking for (ex. Cheap heavy down winter coats) and then read the reviews. Just my personal experience. Good luck!

Invest in a couple of those long underwear base layers and get one of those nano puff jackets. I can wear almost my entire wardrobe year round but just have a nice insulated layer underneath and that thin down jackets will keep you comfortable outside

Check out some of the ski stores online and the larger vendors (like Columbia) for previous season gear, especially with coupon codes and stuff. There are lots of pretty good deals to be had up until the season really kicks off in early December.

For example, Columbia regularly has "web specials" with a coupon code. I think the use "OCTDEALS" as the coupon tonight for an extra 20% off anything on https://www.columbia.com/c/web_specials/

If you're not really picky on color/style, you can usually get something warm and new for not that much compared to local stores and warehouses (though possibly not thrift)

besides thrift stores, Costco, the Columbia outlet at Tanger, and sale racks at places like Kohl's or Macy's.

I had a "Zeroxposur" brand winter snowboarding style jacket that i didn't love the look of, and had friends make fun of the brand name, but it lasted me like 7 years and was warm and comfortable before finally starting to fall apart and was not very expensive. Pretty sure places like Kohls and JCPenney still sell them.

Red White and Blue is the right answer. Every time I go there I am blown away by the selection. The men's selections don't get picked over like the women's. You can score some really nice stuff for pennies on the dollar. Also, just layer up. I like to wear a t-shirt, a button up long sleeve, then take a medium jacket. For most days that gives me enough warmth to deal with just about anything. I work outside a good bit too.

Costco and Sam's club have really nice hoodies and jackets for pretty good prices. If you don't have a membership maybe you know someone that does. Burlington is also responsible, but I haven't been there in a long time.

If you know someone with a Costco membership go there. They have good clothes for very cheap prices.

They have coats, pants, sweat shirts, socks, etc. it’s the cheapest you’ll find for new clothes.

I really damn well love my Carhartt long underwear, which wasn't dirt cheap, but has lasted a few years with almost no wear. *Not* the cotton one.

That means that I can wear fall and spring clothes in the winter and be fine, which means I don't need tons of winter-only stuff to not be cold. If I got to pick one thing, it'd just be the long underwear pants, which the heavyweight was like $40, because I can always wear a second t-shirt already.

In season is also good, but we're not there yet. Most retailers like selling things when people want them, so if you don't want the last coat in a color you didn't want a size too big for a little bit less, just wait until winter.
