I only watched the first couple of seasons, and didn't continue because I found the show to be a bit of a grimdark grind.

It’s a tiring watch the entire way through.

I don’t think so. I started season two and quickly stopped. It wasn’t intriguing anymore.

I think it’s pretty good.

It never dawned on me to stop watching

does it get less miserable?

jogoso2014 t1_iy8dpge wrote

To me it’s always been a balance between despair and hope.

There are always going to be brutal episodes because that world sucks, but it also has some fantastic episodes focusing on good things.

There’s an episode in season 2 about Canada that is amazing.

I liked season 1 but completely lost interest early in season 2 and stopped watching.

It's worth watching. I'd balance it out with something light hearted because it does get pretty miserable.

personally I loved it. There are 5 seasons now.

Didn't get boring. It's gruelling, not tiring.

you have to remember some women live under this level of oppression in the world right now, just not under Christianity.

It's clever, imaginative, thought-provoking.

People who can't deal with it just can't deal with the reality of what some people endure every day.

I didn't watch the last season (or the last two - it's honestly a blur at this point), but from what I've watched no. It's clear the writers didn't know what to do with it once they got past the book.

In my entirely personal opinion, as someone who enjoyed the book but was weary on the idea of watching many seasons of a TV show adaptation of this particular story: short answer, yes.

Longer answer: I think seasons 1-3 are definitely much slower and sadder than they need to be, a long trauma parade, which does have good character arcs, but it's kind of a slog. But Seasons 4-5 really pick up and take a new direction that to me is much more exciting and engaging and very worth it. I rarely tell people to skip episodes when watching shows but this is one where I'd say you could skip some of seasons 2-3 if you're feeling burnt on the trauma of Gilead but want to see the story move forward.

Even as someone who has seen all 5 seasons, I'd advise no. Only S1 is phenomenal and Elisabeth Moss was superb in it. Then it got tiresome and sooo f'n depressing and Moss' performance stayed the same. I cant stand that menacing stare into the camera Moss does every single episode.

But I am the type of person that watches a show because I've invested in it and will watch it until the end because I wanna know the endgame.

no, they make the point of the show very early on and then just hammer you with it

Yep, I'm on my 2nd run-through as I watched them when they came out and my wife had it recommended to her by a friend so I'm watching with her before we get season 5.

It's enjoyable and yes there are some difficult episodes, but definitely worth watching.

phrenicbeat86 t1_iy9le54 wrote

Since the majority of seasons are only 10 episodes, I followed through with it each year since it was an easy binge and didn't have to invest that much time. Definitely glad its ending though, its time to wrap it up and only stayed on since I know its finishing. Doubt I will take a look at the spinoff.

It's interesting too because I can't think of many other shows if any that had that much hype first season, won so much critical acclaim and awards and feels practically forgotten now.

CapMarkoRamius t1_iyb61jb wrote

Watch the last 3 episodes of each season. The 30-second recap will catch you up on the entire plot, and you'll get the exciting bits.

Otherwise no. It's boring and badly written at this point.

However, if you like Bradley Whitford, this latest season he shines.

Watch season 1 and then stop. Like Westworld, this should have been a one season show.

Stopped at the end of S2. Thought it was pretty solid before then, although it was starting to suspend disbelief because of June’s plot armor. Haven’t been that infuriated by a creative decision since the Negan cliffhanger in TWD.
