Well known story. Fats Domino was a legendary New Orleans musician. Chubby Checker was more of a gimmick tied to a dance craze. Many songs in the early 60's were about specific dances.

There was an interview some years ago where he said that, with The Twist, he introduced the idea of dancing apart to the beat (in those words, IIRC). That has become the standard way for people to dance to live music.
