must be available? after 69 weeks? how is the possible? or how can that be expected? what if the company slows down and does lay offs? they can't lay you off bc you had a kid? and they're going to have to fill that position while you're gone. So you leave for over a year and they hire and train someone else. depending on the job, training someone can take a lot of time, effort, and money. So you put all that into a new employee - and then you come back, now you gotta lay off that person who took your job? even if the new person is better?

crazy scenario - you're on paternity leave. bring someone else in, they get pregnant and go on paternity leave, now you bring a 3rd person.. lol. you're supposed to keep all these people on and pay them all bc they had babies? I'd think this law would keep employers from hiring women quite honestly. who wants to deal with that?

I agree. but some people look at Tesla more then just a car company. You can argue its more of a tech company. Or alternative energy company. Obviously their bread and butter is selling cars. You might be right about the shocks and whatnot - but what about their software? Then they're also into solar panels and battery packs (although a small portion of their business today). They have charging stations. They even have a freaking robot they're working on. Who knows if that'll ever work out or make money tho. And they're even talking about a Tesla cellphone. That Tesla phone could be a game changer IMO. The thing about Elon Musk is that he owns so many other huge companies. Space X. Star link. Twitter. The Boring Company. Idk if it'd make financial sense for him with Star Link but he already said he'd integrate it with Teslas and Cellphones. What if he decides only Tesla cars and Tesla Cellphones can link to Star link? Can he do that? Would he do that? I'd imagine he'd make more money allowing everyone to - but that'd almost be game over if not. If you could have hi speed internet in your car and on your phone wherever you are in the world - why would you buy anything else? Screw my shitty android that doesn't work half the time. I'd imagine he'd just want as many users as possible tho. The point being - Tesla is more then a car company. And Elon has the ability to prop one company up with another. It's almost too much power for one person to have. Now he even owns a freaking social media company which is a lot bigger then most people think.

You're not just betting on Tesla. You're betting on Elon.

I guess so. I had never heard of that before. I thought the point giving it to the mom was to help her recover - like physically. on top of being with the child and or breast feeding and whatnot. My brother just had a baby and both him and his wife work and both got 8 weeks off paid. and then he had an optional 4 weeks unpaid on top of that.

idk. these days it could be a trick question.

Why can't a man be "pregnant". That's sexist. A man can be pregnant. Just bc they can't carry a baby doesn't mean anything. If the wife is pregnant then so is the man!

I know for a fact some men are now getting PAID maternity leave.

I personally don't have an issue with signing that stuff. I get it. I'd rather not but I understand why they have you do it. they don't want employees stealing their jobs or clients. or stealing their work ideas. I guess it all depends on the industry and what you're actually doing. it's to protect the company.

I personally work in a trade. the company I work for cut overtime so on the weekends I started working for a buddy to make some extra cash. one of my a hole coworkers somehow found out and went and reported me. I got called into the office and told I wasn't allowed to do that. supposedly in the handbook I signed there was a non compete in there. I really should have read it - but I didn't. at the time I just skimmed thru it and signed it bc I needed the job. at 1st I was extremely angry bc It was on my own time. how can you tell me what I'm allowed to do in my day off? I wasn't stealing company clients. but I was indeed working for the competition. Basically I was told that they owned me and that I couldn't work for anyone else. they did however tell me that if I needed the overtime they'd give me whatever hours I needed. so I figure that was fair.

as an employee it sucks. but from a company perspective I totally understand why they do it.
