This. Remember last week the weather wasn't great either except for Thursday. Pent up demand. Basically if you don't get to the Tidal Basin by 10 crowds were insane.

Exactly. To do real maintenance means a chunk of hours with no trains. DC is not NYC . There is no need for 24/7 subway service. Would there even be bus routes that would support 24/7 demand, have a significant ridership of third shift workers?

Seriously they are bad. I mean, Giant has better croissants for the desperate.

That prob explains it. But they do have quite the spread of pastries, so disappointing.

Thank you for that explanation. I mean, icon or no, I have never seen such a wide range of consistently burnt stuff, it's so weird. I take my $ elsewhere.

I hope the croissants are no longer burnt. I gave up on them after weeks after too many well done croissants and no sign that some one person had been leaving them in too long. I just don't get the attraction for mediocre pastries. They do have a decent patio and obviously it's a neighborhood fave, so, hey diff strokes etc.

I have had better luck in DC acknowledging people's existence instead of dissing them, even if I don't give them a cent. But ignoring people can escalate certain encounters. It's a case by case crapshoot. That's been my experience. Went to school here-stayed for years. Then left for years. Came back. Still works. YMMV.

One thing to note is that DC is a Southern city. I'm from further north on the East Coast where ignore and walk away is definitely the thing to do. But in DC, I've found that even if you don't want to engage, nodding no politely, or a "sorry" no (thanks) is good to defuse potential hostility. Most people will just then move on.

This. Crime is worse since the pandemic as it is in most of the NE Corridor ex Boston (though inching up there also now). You have to be alert, practice city smarts 101. 90s level? Don't think it's that bad yet, but those who can compare can chime in.
DCGinkgo t1_ja1mxzy wrote
Metro is a bit dicier and inching back to pre-pan frequency but not quite there yet....
Restos are meh generally (covid impacts), lots of sneaky new fees, so beware.
Downtown is dead-ish...

Office workers haven't really come back. It is somewhat busier, but def not pre-pandemic levels.

Suburban bus routes in general no matter where they are usually a PITA . Often fine during "the rush" whatever that means in COVID (still) times. But off-rush & on weekends they can be a nightmare to get anywhere within a reasonable period of time. Stick to being close to Metro for real flexibility & service.

Yep, most big cities have univ. researchers looking for subjects. In the Boston area, some sleep studies would pay some serious money usually because...they wanted you to sleep on site...

That's exactly it. You can always spot people who have never lived in a big city, because they complain about things that anyone who grew up in a big city just.deals.with.
