The biz I was referring to wasn’t actually hosting an event, just reposting this group’s propaganda. It’s easy to fall for it — a park for the people sounds great.

In the politics/policy world, they call a fake/paid grassroots campaign astroturf. That’s what this group you’re hosting is: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/17/nyregion/liberty-state-park-nj.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

A cause doesn’t have to be overtly political to be, in my opinion, wrong, craven, and disgusting. I’d urge you to read up on this subject. Sorry, but Paul Fireman isn’t pouring money into this fake grassroots campaign because he loves soccer fields. He’s doing it because he wants to take over part of the park to make more money for his golf course, which you and I will never be able to afford to visit. I promise you that if he succeeds, none of the rich people who come to the PGA events will stop at your brewery. They’ll get on the ferry that leaves from his walled-off golf course and go back to Manhattan.

I, on the other hand, live in walking distance! I like your beer! Love when you have an emo band! I’ve spent lots of money at your place. But this kind of thing is a huge turn off.

I’d encourage to read more about the cause you are hosting: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/17/nyregion/liberty-state-park-nj.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

Major bummer. I just see so many business in my Bergen Lafayette neighborhood falling for this stuff and it’s so depressing. I have a lot of respect for Friends if LSP but I’d like to see a more organized pushback from them or somewhere on this AstroTurf bullshit from Fireman and co.

Why’s it stupid? Businesses can choose which public causes to support, and the public can in turn choose which businesses to support. I won’t support one that is either a) craven enough to back a billionaire who wants to take land away from the public for a private golf course or b) stupid enough to not realize that’s what Fireman’s astroturf campaign is doing.

You read my mind — I have been so craving a pastrami sandwich. The one at Dark Pines seems to be thin-sliced/Cole slaw deal… does anyone know if anywhere in town has a hot pastrami sandwich? Like the thicker cut pastrami with some mustard and a pickle on the side.

And, for any of my fellow Mets fans, since it’s almost time for baseball season: if you haven’t already, next time you’re at Citi Field, get the pastrami sandwich. Just trust me. It’s so good.

I’m also in B-L and do a lot of shopping in Bayonne, at Costco and the Stop and Shop. Sometimes I go to the Acme by the tunnel if I also need to hit up Target or Buy Rite.

But I actually get most of my groceries via FreshDirect. It’s honestly not that much more expensive, especially considering how much time it saves me (and because I don’t end up impulse purchasing stupid stuff I don’t need). I see them delivering on my block often and if you order early enough in the day you can sometimes even get same day delivery. Just another option!

I commuted from downtown Jersey City to Staten Island by car for several years — don’t be scared off, it’s really not bad. The Bayonne Bridge is literally always empty. Your main issues will be the Staten Island Expressway, if you must take it, or other roads on SI being jammed at rush hour, depending on where you’re going. An occasional backup on 78 in Jersey City, but you can take Caven Point Road to get around it (and save a few bucks on tolls).

I second the recommendation of Bergen-Lafayette. You can find street parking, and there’s the turnpike extension on-ramp to Staten Island right over by the Liberty Science Center. I live in the neighborhood and drive to SI all the time to see family (and sometimes for work obligations). It’s usually a breeze.

Downtown, big buildings you’ll have to pay for parking. If you rent in a small building in an area like Paulus Hook, you can park on the street, though sometimes you’ll have to walk a few blocks. That’s where I lived when I commuted to SI. It’s doable, and hipper than Bergen-Lafayette, but Bergen Lafayette’s a little easier/cheaper.

Sure, parents have responsibilities, but kids can’t help who they’re born to, and some of them are born to parents who don’t care, or aren’t capable of caring, or whatever, and that’s part of why we have compulsory and free public education in this country. When parents don’t or can’t meet their children’s educational needs it’s not the parents who get punished, it’s the kids.

And Denino's is very close to the Bayonne Bridge, so pizza-seekers could also potentially have a nice adventure taking light rail to the end of the line in Bayonne, and then walking over the bridge, which has a pedestrian walkway, and then on to Denino's. Good way to burn off the calories on a sunny day, haha.

Though they're both great, and Denino's is probably my favorite overall, I do think Lee's has the better clam pie. My favorite at Denino's is the MOR - a red sauce pie with meatballs, onion and ricotta on top. So good. Lots of great pizza on SI.

I don’t know anyone that does a clam pie in JC but I’d love to hear if someone knows the spot you’re thinking of. I’ve started making my own because it’s hard to find on menus!

If you’re willing to go to Staten Island — Lee’s Tavern and Denino’s both have great clam pies. I think Lee’s is the best for clam pies but heads up it’s a bar pie style.
