My Cuisinart convection toaster oven is still going strong, with at least 10 years of service. Good brands, both of them.

I thought it was filthy af until I saw it was a reflection.

We got a Breville Smart Oven Pro three years ago, and since we got it, we've used our regular-sized oven maybe three times. The knobs are a little plasticky for my taste, but otherwise, it is a rock-solid piece of tech. I love that thing.

Mine gets everyday use, I love it. Currently 3 years old after replacing previous one that was 12.

Breville does not sell individual components for repairing the ovens, so I'm not a big fan anymore.

I literally needed just the door retainer spring for the smart oven air, was told by customer service "nope, not available."

The start button crapped out on ours after a little over a year of use. Replaced it with a button from an old PC and it's still going strong at about the 7 year mark.

I’m on my second Breville unit. First one lasted 8 years until one element failed. My new one is a daily driver in our kitchen. Air fryer setting for chicken strips (minimum 5x week). My only complaint is a super-minor one… the printed paint icons on the panel buttons (interior light, frozen food setting, etc…) are not as durable as previous. Otherwise another solid product from down under.

I have the same one. Crapped out after 3 years. While it was working I loved it. So much so that it’s been sitting in my garage for the last 6 years waiting for me to fix it.

I got one a couple of years ago and use the hell out of it. Once I realized that it can hold a 9x13 baking dish, a quarter baking sheet, and a pizza pan, the big oven lost 80% of it's purpose.. especially in the summer. My only complaint is that the air fryer function is so messy. The dedicated air fryers are much easier to clean and maintain.

I haven’t had great experiences with the Breville brand. I used to think it was a good brand, now I just think it’s a standard/typical brand.

I highly suggest that anyone even remotely entertaining the thought of purchasing one of these to just do it. They are pretty much life-changing.

I have had my Breville Smart Oven for about 7 years now. I have a beautiful range with convection oven but I hardly ever use it because its so big and there is just me. I do most of my roasting and baking in this as the temperature is pretty accurate and its just the right size for me.

I have this exact unit. Complete workhorse, I cook like 7 out of 10 meals in it, all tolled it runs for at least 1-2 hours a day. Wish I'd gone with the bigger one, but couldn't imagine an actual complaint if I wanted to.

rywi2 t1_ixbmm7n wrote

We had a Breville that lasted way too long. Three years after we got it, the fan started getting noisy but that oven kept chugging along (loudly) another eight years. It just recently died and we replaced it with a Ninja but the Breville was better designed.

ktappe t1_ixbp8sp wrote

I wish I could say the same about my five year old Breville toaster. The main button that tells it to toast no longer works. It’s really annoying. Wish I’d just gotten a $30 toaster at Target.

1

yertle38 t1_ixbrsl3 wrote

Our button board has been flakey for years. Press one button and another gets activated. Probably almost 10 years of use though and it still works well enough that it feels wasteful to replace it. I wouldn’t call our Breville toaster super robust though.

My Cuisinart ice cream maker has never frozen the ice cream. It’s basically just a glorified mixer. I used to like their brand until that appliance. Now I’m not so sure.

Breville Smart Ovens are great but also decidedly not buy it for life. Breville doesn't sell replacement parts, and they're impossible to disassemble for a full cleaning. Of the 5 my friends and family own, one died after about 7 years, another has a noisy fan, and two have control panel issues (buttons activating the wrong function). All of us who have them use them at least once a day every day. They're still a great product and one of the only kitchen gadgets I'm evangelical about, but not really BIFL.

rockresy t1_ixc9vf6 wrote

We always buy Breville, fantastic quality. I love the ice-cream maker, it's nearly 10 years old & works perfectly.

Same here, and it’s gotta be way more energy efficient, at least I think. I post on a lot of food subs and so much of it has come out of this thing.

I just scrubbed my toaster oven and got it looking almost brand new using The Pink Stuff (I’m not a shill, a paste with baking soda or liquid barkeeper’s would also work, but I feel like baking soda is really hard to remove completely) and a toothbrush. I avoid the heating elements because I broke one once, but everything else should come clean.

LS6 t1_ixcjlxu wrote

The door on the smart ovens is such an Achilles' heel. Ours crapped out after barely a year. They replaced it under warranty, which was nice I guess, but unless they made major changes to the mechanism I feel like it'll end up going again right after the warranty is up.

pocketjpaul t1_ixcknn2 wrote

10 years for a oven seems pretty feasible for any brand tbf. It’s like one of the most basic appliances you can get at home. Appart from embedded electronics if any, nothing can really fail in a oven.

AltDoxie t1_ixco2iz wrote

I have had my breville for a similar amount of time. A year after having the buttons got all wonky. I have to press the buttons multiple times for it to work…but other than that it cooks perfectly. It does sound like the convection fan is about to go though.

1

divariv t1_ixcpoop wrote

This. There are multiple known issues for the door hinge mechanisms all over the internet. For mine, the door stopped closing all the way because the tiny guide for the rail is a cheap piece of plastic that slowly wears. Found others on the internet that made a replacement part from home depot pieces for $2 but breville won't sell you one. The best they would offer was to send it in for half the cost of a new one, or (after being very persistent) 25 or 50% off (can't remember) on a new one.

I ended up painstakingly taking it apart and repairing the existing guide myself.

I used to be a huge promoter of these products but it made me sour enough that I don't really suggest them anymore.

Try putting a piece of aluminum foil on the inside of the glass door when you air fry something. Just fold it over in place, the door itself will hold it.

Brands in general, some will send you a replacement part no questions asked. Example, I have Kershaw knives with a safety (screw, washer, and plastic stopper). It costs Kershaw more in postage than the parts combined, but they'll send a new kit when the plastic stopper eventually breaks.

I have a Breville glass kettle, it's great, but I wouldn't call anything they make BIFL.

They have a few problems though that made me uninterested in buying more from them. As others have mentioned, they don't sell replacement parts. Their warranties are mostly only a year, which for such a premium priced product is pretty stingy. Their current products aren't as well made as their older ones as well as the number of user complaints seemed to go up over time as I researched some purchases a few years ago.

I think it depends on what the appliance is. I used to have a Cuisinart ice cream maker. I used it a couple of times and then decided it was more work than it was worth. I like my ice cream frozen so hard it's hard to get a spoon into it and the Cuisnart just didn't do that.

elegantbeigemetallic t1_ixea4zl wrote

The old bucket and salted ice churns might come closest to that, with the freezer bowl for the Kitchenaid in second place, but no dedicated home ice cream maker can freeze the batter that hard by itself. They get it to a soft freeze, and then it needs to finish for a few hours in a freezer.

I have this exact same toaster oven. I can also confirm that I’ve had it for 8 years now and still going strong. This replaced a cheaper national brand that broke after two years. Definitely worth the money. My buddy has the next size up for around 6-7 years and he feels the same way.
