As you can see here. https://www.peacefulknights.org/

"Weekly church attendance is required (Christian church of their choice).  They are never required to believe any particular faith, just to hear for 1 hour per week about the One that is providing a roof over their heads.  And of course, it is our hope and prayer that their faith grows while they are with us."

That's a quote obviously I'm against it because of the title you would think it'd be obvious.

This is why I have issues with religious groups giving aid. I hope they actually help people but demanding they go to a service of a specific religion is bullshit and abusive

I mean I guess people who aren't Christians but another religion are just SoL

I can't help but wonder how people would feel about an organization like this enforcing weekly attendance to a Jewish synagogue or a Muslim mosque. Surely nobody would have anything to say about that, right?

Also this is basically admitting that you have the means and facilities to help people but are refusing to do so unless they subject themselves to 1 hour of propaganda a week.

Buffmin t1_j8ejkos wrote

It definitely is. The person requiring help is powerless here. If one is desperate enough they will do whatever to get needed aid.

Same shit missionaries do "stop following your religion and worship ours or we won't bring you food anymore"

if anyone here is thinking "this doesn't sound so bad its only an hour or so a week and you can pick the church!" Let me ask you this. What if it were a Muslim group demanding this?

I don’t understand how a grant can be awarded and then not released. I don’t understand why change in leadership at the grantee organization would affect a previously awarded grant unless the organization chooses to terminate its participation in the grant or the change somehow makes them non compliant with federal CDBG regulations.

If this is a pass through of federal money (ie federal block grant awarded to the state, then parceled out to the county) then there are compliance requirements for Peaceful Knights as a grantee. The authorizing statute for the CDBG programs contains a specific statutory prohibition on religious discrimination in these programs.

ETA: Aggie Schoenberger was just at the Palmerton Chamber of Commerce Meeting this month talking about how she couldn’t get government funding because of her religious requirements. No mention of this from her at that time..

So a gov't grant is being given to a shelter that requires Christianity? Did I get that right? How in the fuck did that get approved? I hate religion. Bunch of intolerant fucks.

Mhm. If you note the downvotes I'm getting, the "intolerant fucks" are here in this thread. I wouldn't want to come to any of them if I was in need. A lot of my identity, including being a queer woman with a functioning uterus, is politicized and demonized by a lot of people like that.

lol, of course they are. I'm a straight white male, and they can still go fuck themselves. I cannot stand they way they go out of their way to make others feel the way they do. Sorry they exist and have to treat you that way.

No, I think people only put a certain level of effort to post things and dumb people don't follow links before downvoting because their too in a hurry to be outraged. It's a shitty policy, but I'm not going to assume the person who bothered to look up the details and repost them for our use is a shitty person by default because they didn't check enough boxes for you. Settle down and go be mad at the right people.

Speaking as a veteran who has been homeless more than once, this is the norm. Most “charities” or shelters come with the condition that you have to worship how they want you to.

This sorta comes to mind, not the same, but still.

Really, this is why we have gov't. Not for military bases in every other nation, but to help people.

I'm a Christian myself but I have to agree with everyone with your attitude towards the religion. It's been twisted and carved into this.. not so Christian thing by our corrupted leaders. Everything they do is the right thing because " that's what God wants ". They've more than dragged the Christian name through the dirt. And 90% of the religion is just a money scam today.

" Come to church and give 20 bucks every Sunday or you'll go to hell. "

I'm tired of seeing people hide behind religion or, more particularly, religious persecution when there are so many other, obvious reasons for why people and/or programs aren't bending over backwards to award things to them.

But PenCor has a monopoly on internet access and owns the only newspaper and cable company in the area. Apparently they are fine with capitalism as long as they don't have to deal with that pesky, pesky competition part of it.

This take is really shockingly ignorant

“Demanding they go to a service of a specific religion is bullshit and abusive” - you can disagree with the approach but words matter, equating a relig. service requirement to abuse is absurd. The majority of people would not agree with that characterization.

“People who aren’t christians are SOL” - No, they will still be offered services discrimination free but are still subject to this private organizations mass requirement if they want to participate. If they are Muslim or another religion they can find Muslim orgs or mosques to render them aid, I imagine many do. If you give aid you are allowed to attach conditions to it.

Thank you for uploading this. Carbon County is one of those counties in northeast PA that hides in plain sight. It's the lower Poconos. Some (very) rich people know that if you want the real Poconos these days, you either go far northwest or far southeast. tnonline.com is its only news outlet, and it's excellent. which is sad, because much more that is newsworthy happens in this county than one might suspect. tnonline.com never gets the credit or funding it deserves. Those American Recovery funds should go to it.

A much larger county's media confided in me they rely on pure chance to cover what happens in the courthouse in Jim Thorpe. This credentialed reporter confided County leaders know that trips by media from out of the area are arduous, time-consuming, and--in Jim Thorpe.

I made this comment however for another reason. A friend is experiencing a very similar problem regarding the federal government overlooking enforced religion. (FWIW, I'm a practicing Christian.) Religious icons of a very distinct religion are allowed to be hung on the walls and placed virtually all over a government--HUD--subsidized building, and management has been made aware of it. The building is funded by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, which apparently is a-okay with the silent preaching.

The religious icons are only getting more numerous. (Hint: the believers aren't Jews or Muslims.)

69FunnyNumberGuy420 t1_j8i4vpx wrote

Maybe we could fund something through impartial government agencies, using payments called "taxes," that could serve everyone equally regardless of creed, instead of relying on religious institutions that can discriminate. Just spitballing here.

There is not a single solitary thing that religion offers that cannot be accomplished without it. It's totally unnecessary to helping people however the religious, especially Christians, believe they have a monopoly on being able to help people.

Imagine if a shelter that required people go attend a Muslim prayer session once a week was given a grant like this. The same people who support this forced Christian service would lose their fucking minds.

Yeah, usually the granting organization has certain requirements, like it can't be tied to worship. One of the other programs doesn't require church attendance, so the grant for that program probably has a stipulation that it can't support that type of activity.

Do you feel the same way about college funding? And about infrastructure? And about poc-focused college admissions?

Also, do you realize that nearly 80% of our country identifies as believers of an Abrahamic god? Do you really want to stick with the ‘our country, our god’ dogma? Cause that’s how you get people stoned for fucking people of the same sex.

Considering they need all this grant money, sounds like "the One" putting a roof over their heads is the government.
