One time in middle school I was having waffles for breakfast and I dropped the plate onto a tile floor where it shattered into a million pieces. I quickly picked up the waffles and transferred them to another plate to eat after I cleaned up all the shards. Later that day in school I had this super intense intestinal pain that hasn't been equaled before or since, and I spent most of the school day curled in a ball on a bed in the office as it hurt less that way.

There was no vomiting or diarrhea at all which has me thinking I ingested small ceramic shards as the plate shattered into pieces ranging from the size of 1/5th a plate to barely thicker than a hair. Regardless it took me years before seeing or even thinking of waffles didn't make me feel sick.

Products are poor quality with suspect handling prior to getting to the restaurant. Restaurant staff are underpaid, understimulated, and abused, and probably have limited pride in their work because there’s no art to cooking corporate trash. And thus anyone with talent leaves and they’re stuck with the dregs, who tend to care less about food safety protocols etc.

Management are pressed to be as efficient as possible with products, so are more likely to serve things past their prime

I had a strange experience with, of all things, Planter's Dry Roasted Peanuts (a common thing in the U.S.). I had bought a jar to munch on but a few hours after I'd had my first handful I got pretty bad diarrhea. I didn't associate it with the peanuts but a few days later when I had another handful the same thing happened. I still couldn't believe it was due to the peanuts, but I hadn't had anything else that day that was remotely unusual so I kind of laid off them for a couple weeks.

Then one night before bedtime I was really hurting for a snack and I just couldn't believe a jar of dry-roasted peanuts could really cause food poisoning so I had a couple more handfuls. Woke up in the middle of the night the sickest I've ever been - sat on the toilet for ten minutes, when I got up the room was spinning and I just wrapped myself in my bathrobe and curled up on the bathroom tile floor hoping either it would end or I would die. I thought I'd had food poisoning before but those were just a few bouts of diarrhea - I've never experienced something like this. So anyway yeah, I don't touch the dry roasted peanuts anymore.

Most food poisoning claims are BS. Quite often it’s just that your stomach didn’t quite agree with what you ate at a certain time. Protein powder sometimes wrecks me too, some others I digest it just fine. Bananas and almonds were awful for my stomach for the longest time, now I’m 150% fine with them. Not everything’s a bloody allergy or food poisoning.

You'd think so, but some stubborn people don't learn lessons even the hard way. My dad still trivializes salmonella, listeria, etc. by deriding food safety habits (handwashing, wiping surfaces, bleaching cutting boards) even though he's been hospitalized for contracting a foodborne illness. Mind you, he was out after one night, but that doesn't justify trivializing the incident.

This is literally me to a t. 😭

I got salmonella poisoning once from a Sweet Tomatoes the night before a Disney trip when I was 6 years old. The next morning I spent the entire day with a fever and just feeling all around terrible. I even remember throwing up a little bit on the bus on the way to school, crying and not wanting to tell anyone because I was afraid that my family wouldn't let me go to Disney world.

Cue me throwing up in the park around sunset. I was so sick I honestly don't even remember how we got from the park back to the cabin at fort wilderness. My grandma laid down with me on the pullout couch and I remember watching "Cats Don't Dance" on the TV. After about 15 minutes I tried to wake her up because I knew I was going to throw up again. She didn't wake up on time and I projectile vomited all over the bed, all over myself and all over the stuffed animals I had bought from the park earlier that day. My sister still makes fun of me for it. But it's not like I didn't try to help the situation. I have CP so I couldn't just get up and run to the bathroom to throw up. I more or less puked in the bed because my grandma refused to wake up and help me. It was a pretty truamatic experience for first grade me. But my dad drove 2 hours to make it to Orlando to come see me and then he and his girlfriend bought me all kinds of toys from the gift shop to cheer me up.

To this day I don't eat at buffets. I'm selective of what I eat and from which restaurants I choose to eat. I even try to avoid chicken if I can help it. Salmonella poisoning is awful and it could even be fatal in a young children or older individuals. I'm lucky I didn't wind up in the hospital. I'm glad the pandemic more or less put an end to buffet style restaurants because they should never exist to begin with. They are a hotbed for food poisoning.

Yep.

A few times I've been ill and thought "Ah, it must have been..." and then realised that there was basically no time in which that could have taken effect - and re-eating that same meal had no effect.

I don't get ill often so it really sticks out in my mind and I try to find the cause and it's basically never attributable to food.

Part of that is because I cook everything "properly" (by which I mean, fuck your still-bloody steaks, if it hasn't changed colour all the way through it's going back on the heat) but also that I preserve my food well (freezing, refrigeration, keeping it sealed, etc.) and I avoid dodgy food (e.g. seafoods unless frozen and then well-cooked).

I have even once or twice taken to literally listing everything I'd eaten in the last few days, as far as memory will serve, and eliminating them as often I still have that food around... and I re-eat it and don't get a recurrence.

Sometimes it's nothing to do with your food, and sometimes people think it can't be anything to do with their food and it was from food from weeks ago.

As to your question the smell was faint, like it smelled less than what premade tuna stored in the fridge over night normally does, but the faint smell was different but not bad, like it didn't smell rotten eggs nowhere near that bad. the look was fine, the texture was the same as any, but the taste... unique as hell it was horrible and instantly the most punguently vile thing to ever cross into my mouth. I've never ate anything as horrible the only thing that even comes close is the smell of rotten moldy oranges... never tasted a rotten moldy orange but the taste of the tuna relates well to the smell of the rotten moldy oranges. Safe to say you're safe if you eat the tuna within an hour or two of uncanning it and if you had adhd don't trust your internal clock not to fail you. EXTREMELY succinctly, 30 to 40 people became intoxicated during a lunch at a restaurant in downtown Gubbio, apparently from fish crudities. And there was an explosion of fulminant and general diarrhea. Some people fainted from sickness and crapped their pants, others were shitting in every corner of the restaurant. Two drunkenly soaked people got behind the wheel to run home to take a shit: one rolled over and the other crashed into 3 cars, the intervening police found these with shit up to their shirts and inside the cars. Ambulances intervened. The echo of the events reached as far as the Marches.
