Here is a version with the flags, if it is easier to understand.

t1_izpvthi wrote

Better, but I think flags + country name would be best. I'm a bit sketchy on my South American flags so I couldn't actually work out who played who.

But love the circle format too, never thought to use this for a knockout comp.

I still have no idea who it is still. American education

4

t1_izs87s0 wrote

Well I don't think any education system has you learning all 200+ flags of the world. And it's not like there's a real need to focus on the 32 World Cup teams.

14

t1_izsdb65 wrote

Are you kidding? It’s not like these are from some estranged country in Tibet. Almost all are pretty relevant.

17

t1_iztc774 wrote

If we're including the group stage countries, Ghana, Senegal and Cameroon have very similar flags and none are very relevant in world affairs.

Serbia and Croatia are close too.

3

t1_izsb1y0 wrote

At one point I’d’ve been able to name them if the silhouette of the country was on there.

Freaking AP Human Geography final and “correctly label every country on an unlabeled map (it had the borders at least).

t1_izs4aod wrote

I think the version with the logos looks better than the version with the flags. Both cool though. Honestly the colors alone are a great indication of who is who. Anyway, special shout-out for getting the Swiss flag right in the alternative version (yes it is square)!

5

t1_izsgcoa wrote

OP yes gotta have the labels, maybe radially on the outside layer?

We need the double upset...Croatia vs Morocco in the final.

435

t1_izq7xv3 wrote

That would make me feel much less bad about Canada doing so poorly in our group with both of them making the final (and Belgium who were expected to do well not even getting out). Man our group was tough.

124

t1_izqdnqk wrote

Yah, we (Canada) were ranked 12 behind Morocco, 25 behind Croatia, and a full 39 behind Belgium in the November FIFA rankings. I think we did pretty well in two of the three group matches.

51

t1_izs6n88 wrote

Six shots on target in three matches and oft-shaky performances from the keeper is hard to say Canada did well. That said, there were some close moments in the Morocco match. Topping the group in CONCACAF, I expected more from them.

2

t1_izrka3a wrote

I honestly would love to see Croatia and Morocco make it to the final.

32

t1_izs24wx wrote

Didnt Croatia get to the final against France last time? Wouldnt be that much of an upset.

22

t1_izs503r wrote

They did, but Argentina is 10 places higher than Croatia in the FIFA rankings, so it would still count as an upset.

11

t1_izrutjh wrote

With a tie being declared and San Marino being crowned winners due to a convenient technicality

t1_izplm1z wrote

Oh man, messed up on the logos;

  • England: that’s The FA logo, not the football team. It should say “England” at the top and have a star
  • France: Should have 2 stars on top
163

OP t1_izpn08h wrote

These are the FA logos, indeed. I believe it is rarely that national team has it's own logo, besides FA logo. Stars are like an extra, sometimes are there sometimes are not.

Edit: I was using logo pack for FAs. Now as you pointed this out, I went on wiki to check. Among 16 teams in the bracket, exactly 2 of them have different logos compared to the FA logos: England and France. I overlooked this, as this is definitely not a standard. I follow football for a long time, and I was convinced FA logos are "the logos".

I guess I could correct it for the next version, but I don't see it like a big deal.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up.

76

t1_izpuack wrote

Forgive my ignorance; the stars I assume represent World Cup championship wins?

29

OP t1_izpwlpn wrote

Yes, that is correct. And, unlike what was written below your comment, European championships are not counted. Only World Cup.

38

t1_izqewok wrote

Then you have Uruguay counting their two Olympic wins as stars.

Edit: lmao can't believe I'm getting downvoted. Uruguay wears 4 stars but only have 2 world cups. The other two would be the Olympics. Do you mfs just blindly believe whoever replies ?

27

t1_izs6bl5 wrote

>Then you have Uruguay counting their two Olympic wins as stars.

Yeah it's kind of dumb but you're missing a huge part, those are the 1924 and 1928 wins, the first WC was played in 1930 (bc they weren't going to include football as a sport in LA 1932).

Those 2 Olympic golds were won by the Uruguayan senior team vs other World class teams, as opposed to what we have now were the Olympics are mostly a U-23 tournament

Because it isn't intuitive. There is also a lot of information missing.

t1_izsnv0j wrote

Guardian's number are made up. As expected, bullshit source.

−3

t1_izt7w5d wrote

Oh sorry I gave benefit of the doubt and figured you weren’t just being obnoxious.

Since you apparently don’t know what an estimate is, here are general explanations for that estimate

The 6,500 figure actually refers to all deaths of migrant workers from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, and Bangladesh, regardless of cause… There is clear evidence of thousands of migrant worker deaths in the lead-up to the World Cup,” said Human Rights Watch’s Michael Page

It’s extremely easy to find sources other than the guardian for an insight into this but you sound more interested in swatting people down than correcting or getting good info.

In total ~15,000 non nationals died overall as a general stat, but it’s hard to argue that the working age immigrants mostly died of heart attacks.

Qatar’s official response, if you want to go with that, was 37, then 400-500, then 37. Now you have the full range of estimates, maybe try to provide one of your own next time.

t1_izpkv5t wrote

I find it intuitive, but then I'm a programmer so that might play a role. What information do you think is missing though?

22

t1_izpnwnp wrote

I’m a magician and I find this intuitive as well.

40

t1_izrsx3r wrote

I wonder how that relates to illusions, if you didn't just bring that up to say it's intuitive either way. The reason I brought up programming is that in the process of codifying problems, we have to break them down in our heads, and there they can often look like graphs - which is what this is. So I thought it could be that other people aren't as used to graphs as I am.

1

t1_izq6mf7 wrote

Compared to regular brackets, the only thing that's missing is the match scores (ideally for the matches and the penalty shoot-outs separately).

19

t1_izr7ckx wrote

Im also a programmer but there is nothing to show whether the next matchups are Croatia-Argentina or Croatia-Morocco

7

t1_izrejkw wrote

The next circle for the semifinals is split vertically to denote Argentina/Croatia and France/Morocco.

15

t1_izs81f8 wrote

I'm not a fan of football, but using team logos instead of country names makes this pretty hard to follow for a casual viewer.

Also repeating colors for different teams is confusing and doesn't really help with team recognition.

It also doesn't show the match scores which sports brackets usually do.

And it doesn't provide any information about the teams rank coming into the tournament, which again brackets usually do.

This format would look cool printed on a tee-shirt at the end of the tournament. But personally I don't see it as a good reference during the competition.

4

t1_izsbc98 wrote

Teams having a rank before the tournament is not something anyone really tales seriously in football

2

t1_izqkk7u wrote

Personally I like this one better.

23

t1_izrxtja wrote

I don't, because flag design kinda ruins the clarity of the graphic. E.g. France's segment looks like three different blocks at a glance. This one is the same format but more readable.

Edit - the top comment reply to that post is the most readable and best looking version of this

t1_izr55yd wrote

I think it came about from NCAA March Madness a couple/few years back, someone on Reddit posted this style of bracket and it took off

9

t1_izrblw9 wrote

They haven't lost on penalties. Although they missed one, during the regular time

Edit: why are you downvoting me? Losing on penalties means playing 120 min and then do the penalties shoot out. In fact, Kane missing was 1st penalty England ever missed during the game time (excluding shoot out at the end).

9

t1_izrrupv wrote

Because yanks don’t understand football. Some of them genuinely believe that if people Lebron James and Tom Brady played football, instead of their respective sports, that they would be word cup champions every year.

nothing i particular, but i guess it looks more visually compact and symmetrical compared to the regular brackets system

2

t1_izreoij wrote

Really cool way of representing the info.

My only constructive criticism is you should have made the divider lines a bit thinner. They draw way too much attention to themselves, and there is very little room to expand the symbols because of it.

2

t1_izsh1bw wrote

This works once you enter this stage, but would be a bad way to represent a tournament. The cognitive load to understand who played who in the first round is much higher than the typical tree diagram with clear spacing between the matchups. Visualization of data is about understanding first

It would be cool to see a radial bracket where the area/country in each ring is determined by the odds they have to win the World Cup or to advance to the next round. It would be a cool way to show Croatia and moroccos success as well as many other upsets.

Does anyone know what program is used to create these brackets?
