This is so cool, just sent it to some friends in MA too, and will definitely be using it next time I, or a family member needs a procedure done. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻

BTW are these prices all-in or are they still subject to "oh that's just for the surgery/surgeon but doesn't include the anesthesiologist" sort of thing?

It didn't show any hospitals in Boston/Brookline for C-sections with UHC insurance. Sounds like bad data.

This is actually useful. I applaud you for making something that isn’t solely just another way to market ads.

schoolbusserman t1_izg6sgo wrote

Wow interesting. For example, the Knee Replacement (Total Knee Replacement) surgery at Lowell general hospital is listed as $1,794 which seems super low. Then at St Elizabeth's its $42,000. Is it possible that different hospitals are including different services and medical devices under the same procedure? I can't imagine compensating a surgeon, anesthetist, etc for $1794 not to mention the cost of the knee replacement part.

I’d love to help add insurance data for tufts health plan Medicare preferred products

HardRockGeologist t1_izgfajp wrote

Very nice!

Any plans to include Medicare as one of the insurers? I'm sitting here looking at a cast covered foot, the result of a calcaneal osteotomy (type of foot surgery) I had a week ago. Any plans to add foot surgeries to the list of procedures?

Quirky_Butterfly_946 t1_izgndyn wrote

So I wanted to see how this worked and I did an MRI in my hometown with my insurance and it gave me something in the 4200 range. When I scrolled to the bottom and there are other hospitals listed, there was one two towns over that listed it for $3. What's up with that?

This is fucking awesome. You are a good person and I hope life treats you well. Expand this to other states and put some advertising on it to make some money for your work because you deserve it. One more thing , I looked up mris just to check it out and saw some places that said 3 bucks. Is that correct?

Be wary of internet dwellers inviting you to share your personal medical and location data. This will be a great tool for whichever insurance company buys this startup to adjust their rates and fees based on localized medical inquiries.

Very cool! Definitely giving startup vibes, you planning to keep the data itself and your ETL process proprietary?

I work for a startup that's solving a very similar problem in a different space.

I had similar observations. Plus, the insurance coverage isn't adequately specific. For example, just putting in BCBS... is that the PPO? I have a BCBS high deductible health plan and the numbers here just don't make sense.

virgil1134 t1_izh8d2i wrote

Wouldn't these be the prices without insurance coverage? That is the problem with insurance! Every single one negotiates services at different rates even for services performed at the same hospital.

Would you include data for Medicare and/or Medicaid?

2

FitzwilliamTDarcy t1_izj5kdw wrote

IME this is the rub, especially when it comes to insurance coverage. You can jump through all sorts of hoops to ensure that "the procedure" is covered by your insurance, but then magically the anesthesiologist isn't. At all. And is $25,000 or something ludicrous.

Couple years ago my wife and I held up a fully staffed OR because literally 5 minutes before going in for surgery they put a form in front of us, basically a release, saying that certain aspects *may* not be covered by insurance (including anesthesia/anesthesiologist - they actually called that out), and that we were personally accepting/guaranteeing responsibility for same. This was despite having spent weeks chasing down people at the hospital and our insurance company saying that everything was covered.

So we just refused to sign despite them pressuring us. Magically, 20 minutes later we were cleared for surgery without having to sign the fucking form. Fuck that. Fuck them.

Yeah its actually not. Aside from your very obvious privacy issues and utter bullshit here on this thread, your tool is a completely useless piece of shit, hacked together by what appears to be a bunch of greedy morons socially manipulating people on the internet in an attempt to hock a shitbox broken tool. Fuck right off.

Dude is spamming this all over city subs, seems to be from NY since he's looking for $6 haircuts in Chinatown.

UpCoconut t1_izkdek4 wrote

not necessarily. With my HDHP, the insurance still has a negotiated rate. It's just a negotiated rate that I have to pay instead of the insurance company paying it. For example, I had emergency surgery that was billed to me for $15K. I added my insurance and the bill was revised to $7K for it. I then negotiated it down from there. The website says that BCBS for this surgery is $12 at the hospital I went to. Not $12K. $12. Definitely wrong.
