It’s always interesting when there are like two days of gloom or two days of a chill and people start saying things like “It’s always gloomy ans cold here!!”

This area is one of the sunniest and warmest I’ve lived in, even during the winter. As for the people, maybe you’re just around the wrong crowd. Most people seem to be relatively happy here.

Cheer up. Things could always be worse.

The weather lately has been gray, but I think we often forget how lucky we are to live in a city like DC. You're surrounded by monuments and museums. There is always some cool or interesting event to join in this city. And you can meet cool people if you keep an open mind and just be open to being friendly.

And if that's not good enough for you, DC gets really colorful when the cherry blossoms bloom!

I just got back from 5 weeks in New England and have been thrilled with how much sunshine there’s been. It’s all relative!

It was 52 today, in January! A great time to get outside and enjoy the city.

Not accurate, but I definitely turn into a grey person in the winter. Saving vacation days for winter (long beach weekends in the summer instead of a full week) and splurging on warm winter clothes that I actually like helps a bit!

Ya, it could be seasonal affective disorder. About 10 million Americans suffer from Winter depression from what I've read. It's no joke.

It has hit me super hard this winter. I’ll go through weeks where I’m my typical chipper self, and then wake up one day an absolute miserable ass. Actually didn’t even occur to me that it was likely SAD, until like last week.

Ok, there seems to be a SAD connection here. FYI, I checked my weather app and the next 9 days are gonna be cloudy or rain (only one day will be sunny-Friday). Hello Seattle weather! Ha ha.

No. I never thought that when I lived in DC. It’s a luxury to be able to take the metro to the national mall and simply walk around. Or the ability to go to a Smithsonian (postal is my favorite). I used to run to the Washington Monument from NW. And the restaurants that are often just in walking distance…Even now, living in the suburbs, I simply take it for granted the monuments that are so accessible to us.

Good point. Much of suffering is self-created, and most of the time, individuals have the ability to transform themselves and the negative thoughts they may have about situations occurring within their life. Depression adds a whole new level of complexity, however.

I was feeling similarly about life and this city as you described in your post. Now I have a puppy and I have several pleasant interactions with strangers every day and it has definitely altered my perspective for the better.

On the flip slide I just bathed my princess for the 3rd time in 3 days because she rolled in poop AGAIN on our walk in the park today. So it's definitely work, but I'd say it's worth it. It's not like I was spending my time productively before, and now at least I'm out walking a couple hours a day and talking to people.

You are who you surround yourself with. While easy to be surrounded by miserable people in DC there are also many many interesting and vibrant people that call DC home.

There was talk awhile back about moving the part of Mass that sticks out to the Atlantic time zone. I would make a straight line up the east coast and every part that sticks out past Bal’mer gets booted to the Atlantic time zone.

Nah, I can’t vibe with this perspective of DC. Coming from upstate m, NY where there just was a huge snow storm, I love the mild winters here and even the cloudy days. I mean it is January, lol.

That’s how I felt when I worked in a windowless office and commuted surrounded by a depressed crowd of people all dressed in black or grey coats.

Now I work from home and feel the sun on my face most days even in winter

Not going to lie, when I was young growing up in NOVA this is what I felt. I distinctly remember that everyday felt cloudy and grey. Was lucky enough to live in Atlanta, Chicago, SW Virginia, Southeast PA and never really felt that same feeling in any other location. Now that I’ve moved back to DC though I really only notice/despise the constant humidity in the warmer months. All this to say that I think it’s relative 😂

stache_twista t1_j5u366j wrote

I’m from Chicago where it is generally 10+ degrees colder than DC year-round and the sun disappears for like 5 months straight in winter. Seasonal depression there is real. Today’s weather sucks but it’s one day and mild. I’ll gladly take 40s in January
