Reply to Manual Transmission Driving Lessons by jeffkeyrouz87
I grew up in Australia and learned to drive there. If you take the test in an automatic transmission car, your driver's license literally says so and it's against the law for you to drive a manual transmission. Peer pressure means that basically no one gets the "auto only" license.
When I moved here, it always seemed strange that you could get a license that covers driving manuals and autos when some people have literally never driven a manual transmission car.

I suggest you take a look at our incarceration rate per capita and then think about whether or not the answer is "the solution is to put more people in prison".

Wegman's should have it, Whole Foods may have it, Shaw's/Star Markets often do have it.
tl;dr
big supermarkets will probably have it in their international aisle.

I actually agree with you that, in theory, it is a good idea. But there is a surprising lack of evidence that residency requirements help, and there is even some evidence that they actually make things worse.
I would rather hire a great officer who cares and lives somewhere else than an ambivalent one who lives next door.

I suppose it is in theory, but how do you quantify it? How do you weigh the benefits (which are admittedly difficult to measure) with the reality that you are drastically limiting your pool of applicants for jobs?
Do you think someone living in Roslindale is going to be a better cop (or 911 dispatcher or arborist or...) than someone from Needham just because they live in Roslindale?
And if the answer to this is "Yes", how do you reconcile that with the fact that Boston Public Schools does not require its teachers to live in Boston? I would argue that teaching kids is a pretty important job...

The residency requirement is so dumb I am surprised they could find people to defend it with a straight face.

What does municipal TV look like? Do they just rebroadcast Verizon/Comcast content, or something else?

These days OP can use Waze (or Google Maps) and the "go later" feature to get estimates that tend to be pretty accurate. But you're right: nothing prepares you for it quite like doing it.

I commuted from Portland to Waltham for about 9 months. With the right scheduling and no traffic, it wasn't that bad a way to spend 2 hours. I'd rather go fast for 2 hours than stop-and-go for 1 hour.

I made the mistake once (which I alluded to in another post) of paying for a job up front. Won't make that mistake again..

It was quite some time ago but I have done this as well. OP: talk to the AG, talk to your local DA, and talk to your local PD.
Was $7K the price of the whole job or just a deposit?
Sorry that you're going through this. :/
