>Meet China's latest AI news anchor, a young woman who runs virtual Q&A sessions to teach people propaganda

>Ren Xiaorong debuted on Weibo on Sunday and so far only works with preset questions and responses.  Chinese state media outlet People's Daily has unveiled its digital news anchor, who'll be online 24/7.

>The AI-driven chatbot claims to have learned the skills of "thousands of news anchors." It's so far only been able to answer pre-set questions with propaganda-driven responses.

China has unveiled its latest digital news anchor, an "artificial intelligence" entity that claims to provide 24/7 news coverage.

The anchor, a virtual young woman called Ren Xiaorong, introduced herself to Weibo, China's version of Twitter, in a video published on Sunday by state media People's Daily. Sporting a black jacket and shoulder-length hair tucked behind her ears, Ren claims to harness the professional skills of "thousands of news anchors."

"365 days, 24 hours. News broadcasts about any topic all year round," Ren says in a robotic tone. "Ever single bit of feedback you give will help me improve myself," the bot added in the video.

People on Weibo, a platform that's heavily moderated and censored, still gave Ren a warm welcome despite her limited capabilities.

"This figure looks pretty good! Technology is changing with each passing day," wrote one Weibo user. "If it wasn't for the synthetic dubbing, on first glance you wouldn't be able to tell if this was a virtual person. Will news anchors be replaced by AI in the future?" wrote another.

Ren now joins a small crowd of digital AI news anchors in China, the first of which debuted on state agency Xinhua in 2018. So far, however, the virtual anchor is no rival to ChatGPT. Insider saw that Ren's only function, as of Thursday, is providing pre-programmed answers to questions about China's "Two Sessions" political conference.

Users are able to select one of four preset questions related to the conference, to which Ren will give a generic answer in line with the central government's messaging. One can cycle through different sets of questions, but at no point can users type their own messages to Ren.

China is now racing to find its answer to ChatGPT, the AI chat bot that's disrupted industries.

It speaks to how far education has been dumbed down that people would expect a virtual news anchor to be anything else than a mouthpiece for national interests. Even human corporate shills say the same thing on US tv. Jon Stewart did a pretty harsh skit on it.

As with everything: it's not because it's new that it is better for that reason alone.

I would never watch that except the one time to see what it looks like and then never again. This isn't worth a moment's time. As a news source its value is 0.

Wow, it's literally just like in that Disturbed music video, "The Vengeful One." How dystopian.

Right, so "AI" in the same way that video game NPCs have AI. Just more tech fluff from the Chinese government.

The living talking heads of today are more influential than the up and coming virtual talking heads.

But that'll change as more virtual heads start popping up and the simple minded get hooked on their words like they do to the current talking heads.

It's gonna be all about where you live in the future. I mean yea I guess still being fed propaganda sucks, but if all I have to do is bow to the ruler of China, and I can have all I could ever want and access to many utopia simulations (based off of what your country allows) then f it. Before the age of abundance you would have to bow either way, the only difference is you were living in terrible conditions. (Compared to those of the age of abundance)

And in the united states people can't see that the same thing applies to the non-AI news

where are they gonna get all the energy to run all that virtual er "network"?

This is a preview of the end of 'AI', a non-conscious, non-intelligent influence machine pretending to be everyone's smart friend, just don't look at the little man behind the curtain. The 'singularity' is going to look a lot like more ads and propaganda.

Imagine brining this tech just to the 1980's. It would be like magic, not for a moment would they assume that's not a real breathing huma. Also bonus points for them, no need (yet) to threaten sn AI to do what you want.

It’s slightly different here in that the News in America serves mostly corporate interests whereas the news in China serves party interests. Yes there are conservative news stations and more liberal news stations but only insofar as they cover social issues, they refuse to comment on wage disparity or economic inequality to any major degree and always end up supporting bailouts for the wealthy while failing to cover labor issues in a meaningful way.

Well get used to it, all the tech bros like elon musk and jeff bezos praise china for their model and think the us should adopt it, so odds are it will be adopted by the us, maybe not in main media outlets right away, but odds are all tech companies will probably have an ai mascot to act as the company's mouth piece...you know, if the economy doesn't collapse this year.

It was recently reported that Venezuela started using AI avatars to also spread propaganda. I guess this is our new reality.
In the Venezuelan case, the government contracted the startup Synethesia to create news cast videos using American AI avatars that talk about how well the Venezuelan economy was doing, and also promoting tourist spots. They posted the videos to Youtube under the "House of News" channel but I believe they've been taken down by now.
I can only imagine what's going to happen here in the US leading up to the 2024 election. There's no regulation on AI right now. The best we can all do is stay informed.

I'm a principal engineer at a tech company and truly in my entire career have never seen any technology get integrated as quickly as AI is right now. Just think in the last few weeks, you have SnapChat, Discord, Spotify, Shopify, Duolingo, Stripe, HubSpot, Salesforce with Slack, etc. all wrapping OpenAI.

Because of all the hype, I became obsessed with discerning real value and opportunities from the noise / hype around it, and started writing an email that gets published weekdays at 6:30 AM EST called GPT Road . It summarizes the latest news in AI in bullet point format so its easy to read. Please feel welcomed to join if you or anyone else is interested. There's no ads, as I'm not making nay money off of it. And its a small community, not 10,000+ people (only about ~360 readers).

The objective is to keep people who are interested informed in the latest updates in AI, because the tech is being dropped so quickly on society, and there's absolutely no regulation around it. Truly mind blowing.

Were next for what? Getting ai propaganda? Nah weve already got human-made propaganda brainwashing the idiots. AI propaganda is just easier to spot. The situation couldnt possibly get worse, on the contrary, Most countries are getting better at combatting propaganda. China has to literally run its own firewall to keep us from educating its people. Russia imprisons and kills the good guys.

On reddit, our community-run subs are great and also bad at combatting it. As long as a subreddit doesnt get run by fascist psychos, its good at combatting propaganda.

The people that do still believe propaganda in the democratic countries/subs, are just SOOOOO stupid that they fall for literally anything. Combatting that would be like trying to educate a snail; it just wont happen, ever, no matter what.

Also this chinese news thing from this article doesnt have any actual AI in it. Its pre-recorded propaganda videos that they are SAYING is AI so that the morons will believe its full of knowledge.
