There’s not much foot traffic there unless it’s game day, well at least compared to other parts of down town so I can’t image it’s deterring much crime lol

They’ve been sitting there since a guy got shot at that intersection

I’ve also had this thought! Not sure the shooting checks out, that would require a lot of cops on a lot of corners. Maybe because of the heavy panhandling?

I’ve seen a cop sitting there for the past year, I don’t think it’s because of the shooting that happened in July. It was probably because ppl tend to run through the lights there

Mxuw OP t1_iz6n9eq wrote

that seems most likely in my opinion, I can’t count how many times I’ve seen panhandlers there. But on the other hand I’ve seen them there and the cops don’t do anything

Could also be to actively prevent motorists from going straight from the leftmost right-turn lane instead of turning onto conway…

I wonder why there’s a cop on the corner of Charles and E. Mt Royal ave every night when I’ve witnessed no less than 4 people run the red while making a left from the right lane in the past month.

Useless.

edit

to the person who responded to this comment with “they’re there for crime not traffic violations” and deleted it:

  1. Running a red light can have pretty horrible repercussions when it occurs at a busy intersection with students and other people crossing Charles Street all the time. Especially at night.

  2. If you think putting the lights on, pulling through an intersection and giving someone a ticket would magically open up the flood gates from crime to occur on the other side of the intersection, I have a bridge to sell you.

  3. Picking and choosing what rules and/or laws you enforce is exactly what makes people feel entitled to do it in the first place. Traffic enforcement works in several ways, one of which is deterrence.

I see the cop car or truck there every single day. It kills me that they are being used to babysit the people who do the squeegees instead of banning the practice and giving those guys jobs with the city.

Those folks get more protection than people who go out here and work honest jobs where they don't have to annoy others to make a living.

It's ridiculous!

I drive by there frequently and there hasn’t always been a cop there like there is now. Was a cop frequently there-yes. But not like there is now which is basically all times. The day of that shooting before it happened a police officer made an arrest on that street.

21

jupitaur9 t1_iz710ql wrote

There were squeegees there before the shooting, and there were concerns about squeegee violence and theft before then.

It’s a chokepoint for a large percentage of the traffic coming into the city. Visitors come through there. So it is a good place for police to make themselves known.

strawberitadaydream t1_iz75fmh wrote

I believe it was done to discourage squeegy-ing but dem boiz still be out there sometimes, even chatting with the cops.

This is the area the driver/squeegee shooting happened. When the cops started sitting there I wondered why that corner and not all the other places people got killed in the city, and when you check the rent in that building you get your answer

theonetruedavid t1_iz76wjv wrote

I walk by this cop car multiple days a week to get to/from work. I, an average Baltimore resident in the L, have alerted the police to issues with traffic lights on multiple occasions since July, the kinds of issues you could easily see from inside the vehicle, so they’re clearly not doing traffic enforcement. The police are there for one reason and one reason only: to avoid (or deter or maybe just delay the city from) another high-profile murder involving a squeegee worker at a major intersection that would force the city’s hand and force the city to police behavior that realistically will not stop until larger systemic changes are made and implemented by the city government.

25

planetarylaw t1_iz7829l wrote

Ah yes the old "Baltimore left" I call it. My favorite though is when at the red light you see the driver make a right turn then immediately a u turn then another right to effectively avoid the red light.

noseltzie t1_iz7aygi wrote

A cop car has been there since the 4th of July shooting, unrelated to the squeegee incident. They absolutely do not enforce anything traffic related. The cop cars for the squeegee-ers sit up at Charles and Conway where they actually do the squeegeeing, but also enforce nothing

nesto92 t1_iz7sam2 wrote

What exactly are they doing there besides wasting taxpayer dollars is the real question.

archenemy_43 t1_iz7uqkt wrote

I have a friend that’s BCPD; cops in the city are given orders to post up at specific intersections during specific hours for the sole reason to create a presence.

It doesn’t matter if a car flies through that intersection at 130 mph, they’re instructed to stay put.

5

Manmadegoose t1_iz7xp0v wrote

Oh I agree with you completely but at the very least it couldn't be said that there are no jobs for them available.

Now to be more positive, let's say there are some young men that legitimately want to work to provide for their families? Then, at the very least they would be given the opportunity to do so which I am all for.

It’s just a way to get mega overtime. Baltimore has the Drop Program. It averages the last 3 years of compensation as your retirement money so they let somebody close to retirement sit in the car for OT hours.

Velghast t1_iz99h9h wrote

There's a lot of jobs available by legit employers in Baltimore but honestly after talking with one of the squeegee kids it sounds like they make a lot more money than possible at a 9:00 to 5:00 and with very flexible hours and they can just quit whenever they want to and come back whenever they want.

I was talking to one kid and he said he was pulling at least 150 bucks a day.

BPD still does traffic enforcement, but probably not for your race / socio economic status.

Poor black folks in Baltimore get pulled over all the time

Lol yt people discussing urban issues is always hilarious to me. Y’all miss the mark so easily. 🤣 this is simple. A crime occurred in an area that makes the city a lot of money. In order to prevent people from abandoning said area for fear of their safety you add a deterrent. But tbh the officers in those stuck “posts” are probably being retaliated against and most likely aren’t gonna do to much work protecting and serving as a result. That’s beside the point tho. Please don’t hurt y’all selves thinking to hard. K.I.S.S. ✌🏾

This is occurring in various parts of the city. One constantly sits in an apartment complex lot on Bowleys Lane near Sinclair Lane. Every single time I drive by it is there. I believe these are known problem areas or high profile areas that have the cop sitting there as the result of influence.

CaptainObvious110 t1_izbm1bp wrote

Yes, and I totally disagree with that approach. Once someone died I figured that was going to be a wrap for that activity but NO!

Someone dies and instead of it getting shut down you try to negotiate with these folks as it they are in any position to make demands? I thought these were children?

Children don't need to be ripping and running the streets. They need to be with with their parents. If their parents aren't giving them the proper care for whatever reason then they need case workers to check on them and get them the proper resources to try to address those issues.

But to say to them "Oh you want to wash windows and harass people in the process because you don't want a real job? That's ok, we'll just give you money to not do that ok?

What kind of message are you sending to the young people when you allow them to call the shots like that?

No. As the adult, you set the rules and if rules aren't followed then consequences are in order. That's the way to dignify people and help people to be elevated, not to just pander to a bunch of folks that are causing a whole lot of drama.

2

CaptainObvious110 t1_izbm9o7 wrote

You make a very good point. "People discussing urban issues that lack an urban background". In itself that's not wrong but the problem is that they don't try to ask questions all that happens is the same crap gets spewed over and over and then the county folks come in with their comments from the peanut gallery and it goes on and on.

The good part when you look around enough you are bound to find a nugget of value in the comments where someone says something that actually makes sense.

1

CaptainObvious110 t1_izbuj2z wrote

You also have to factor in that they aren't paying any taxes either. Imagine how much more you would be bringing home if you didn't have taxes taken out of your check each pay period.

Then imagine having that money and not having to pay rent, not having to pay for food and not having to pay for medical care either or and no car insurance.

So it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand WHY they do it.

The problem is that the fact that it's ALLOWED in the first place.

Someone has to be benefiting by pandering to these folks and until that person is properly addressed the status quo will absolutely continue.

1

CaptainObvious110 t1_izc8yif wrote

Yeah it's a real shame. It kind of reminds me of when there would be crime mob that would go to a restaurant or other place of business and extort them for "protection fees".

In this case it's the ENTIRE city. A group of teenagers are able to dictate the policy of an entire city.

Let that sink in for a moment.

Add to that people in this very subreddit who's needle is stuck on them being folks whose brains aren't fully developed so ”they can't really help being armed and dangerous. After all, they are the product of their environment."

Are you serious?

Even the Bible says that "foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child". But it doesn't stop there with that TRUE statement.... It goes on to say....

"But the rod of DISCIPLINE shall drive it far away from him". Proverbs 22:15.

Well what does the word "discipline" mean?

  1. Training expected to produce a specific character or pattern of behavior, especially training that produces moral or mental improvement.

  2. Control obtained by enforcing compliance or order.

Please tell me which one of these is being done both to deal with this current issue and or to solve various problems we have in this city?

No discipline at home, the school system fails them, the politicians fail them, virtually everyone fails them that are in fact ADULTS and whose brains are fully developed. So what's their excuse?

Let's go back to that first definition of discipline. Wouldn't that include holding people accountable for their own actions? Why is it that these kids have such a low set of expectations put upon them?

Tell me that's not messed up!

CaptainObvious110 t1_izc9ugt wrote
