The pigs shot a guy in his own damn house for holding a knife and that's the headline?
P0Rt1ng4Duty t1_j2mq16f wrote
''No ongoing threat'' indeed.
Did the police all quit their jobs and turn in their guns? Or are they still out there shooting people for eating a chicken sandwich in the parking lot of KFC?

So... Police kill resident... because. Terrible police work (assumed since the citizen died) and terrible reporting. We don't really know what happened but somebody died at the hands of the police.
Maldonian t1_j2n0t1k wrote
Well, we know from the article that the police were called to that address, and didn’t go there just because they felt like it.
Maldonian t1_j2n1aha wrote
Redditors will think I’m quirky and weird, but just for the heck of it, I spent my entire New Year’s Day with every knife I own put away. And then none of the people I live with called the police. I also didn’t brandish any of my knives around police officers.
And then, guess what happened? Here I am this morning, alive and not shot by the police. Weather seems nice today too.
That guy in Gilford sure had a strange way of celebrating the holidays.

WMUR is not even HS level reporting
Maldonian t1_j2n1e6w wrote
WMUR employs idiots. They even had a headline a while back that was written as if the same man was executed twice.
Maldonian t1_j2n1jdw wrote
Yes, they really should have just left the guy alone and ignore the concerns of the person who called in.

It's pretty embarrassing how bad production value at WMUR has dropped since they were sold. They used to be quaint and quirky. Not quite as polished as the Boston stations but a well done stand alone station.
Now not so much. You can almost feel the talent try and failing for lack of resources and backing.

Great summary of a sad situation
Maldonian t1_j2n8co7 wrote
I know, right? He sure doesn't sound too smart. Pretty crappy he tied up valuable resources, but I'm glad he wasn't able to hurt any of the officers.
Maldonian t1_j2n8nay wrote
I agree that the reporting is lackluster, but there probably isn't anything else to report until the incident is further investigated.
But how can you assume that the police work is "terrible" without good reporting? If you automatically assume that every time a suspect or perpetrator dies, it's the police's fault, that shows a lot of bias on your part.
Maldonian t1_j2n8slj wrote

Maldonian t1_j2n93g8 wrote
Why are you making assumptions about the guy's mental health? Isn't it possible that he was just an asshole? Or stupid? Or both?
Also, if I may ask a personal question, how did you celebrate New Year's Day yesterday? Did you engage in any activity that caused the people around you to call the police? Did you threaten anyone with a knife? Somehow my guess is no to both. That's one of the reasons you woke up alive today.
smartest_kobold t1_j2nbngh wrote
The police have incredible discretion in which incidents they respond to and how. So, that's a part of every police interaction.
PowPowPowerCrystal t1_j2nclwc wrote
Started reading the comments, am dumber. Boy it must be fun to construct a narrative with no facts.
Maldonian t1_j2ncxi9 wrote
I agree with you for the most part. Police often can't even be bothered to come out for noise or parking complaints. But I can hardly imagine a situation where the police wouldn't respond to a domestic violence/threat of domestic violence complaint.
And yes, once they're there, how they respond to it does involve a lot of discretion. I'll agree with that. But the man with the knife had just as much discretion as the officers did, and seemingly chose not to use it. I know that neither you nor I were there, but from the article, the officers even tried using the taser first, and the suspect still chose to be shot rather than to put the knife down and be arrested.
MiggySmalls6767 t1_j2nd5w2 wrote
So.. they should not have responded to another resident calling with concerns about a man with a knife?

There are plenty of ways to deal with someone wielding a knife… I am almost 100% sure even without a full story that they didn’t have to shoot and kill this guy.

volatica t1_j2no9j5 wrote
Probably not the editor's choice, they're probably "directed" to word headlines to avoid indicating police culpability.
smartest_kobold t1_j2norig wrote
First, the article doesn't clarify who called in the report. Second, it's too early to tell. A man holding a knife in a house in and of itself doesn't warrant police attention. Third, the headline and article are written in a weird way by separating the firing of the officer's gun and the guy getting shot.

He had a knife inside his house, because that's so uncommon, and that prompted police to perform a home invasion. Upon entering, they were met with force, and decided to overwhelm the man and kill him... Is what I gathered from this terribly-written article.

Someone, sounds like a member of his household called this in, which means they felt unsafe.
Bad things happen, but they happen less often if you comply and sue later.

Makes sense. We gained 20 + million people since 2010… then had a pandemic which fueled incredible division, inequality, domestic violence, and a rush on gun sales.
How many cops were killed by citizens in 2021 vs previous years?
The fact that more people were killed by police in 2021 needs additional analysis to draw any take-aways about police-work trends, especially ones that would lead a reporter to draw conclusions in this specific case.
