There was a time… 7 hours to go before kickoff. At this point in my life, longevity is the name of the game.

I honestly don’t get why you’d wanna be there for 12 hours. I’d black out from boredom drinking before the game and/or go bankrupt.

I was at a local bar (Tucson, AZ) for the 2018 game. Stress-drank the entire time. Blacked out the moment Gronk dropped that last toss.

Woke up on thebother side of a mountain. No fucking clue how I got there.

Never. Again.

What’s the line like at McMennamin’s in Mt. Airy? Man I miss living in Philly? Go Eagles!

1

Gabagoo44 t1_j89imkf wrote

I’d argue the same for tailgating at the Linc. I’m a big Eagles fan but no shot I’m drinking for 5/6 hours before the game, 1/2 maybe but anymore than that is just plain boring.

I understand wanting to to be with other folks to enjoy the energy and atmosphere but gd I am stressed looking at this. I'm just gonna watch and drink at home.

SupaflyIRL t1_j89me7r wrote

They have capacity limits and people are going to stay the whole game. People are going to be out of luck if they don’t get to a place real early.

Get in early or watch from outside.

megaphone369 t1_j89n2d9 wrote

But why tho?

Wouldn't it be better just to go to any of the other 10 billion bars nearby instead of waiting in line?

I'm new to Philly, so am I missing something? I like their beers, but is there a tradition about specifically drinking Victory during important sporting events?

ogavs t1_j89n555 wrote

It's still new-ish and on a stretch of the parkway that has hotels and office building towers. So you have commuter and traveler crowd. The only time I've been in there was to stop in for a beer after going to the Barnes with my sister who lives out of town.

VVnessaVV t1_j89o4ze wrote

I saw people lined up down the block for drinker’s pub and some people literally brought chairs for the line 😂 like it is 1 pm you are going to be destroyed by the time the game even starts what is the point of this? Hahaha

ThisHatRightHere t1_j89pbtj wrote

Very fair. Just seems surprising to have people that think enough ahead to be out there first thing in the morning to wait in line but not reserve a spot somewhere.

Then again I’m sure this is mostly college kids and my brain definitely didn’t think these things out too clearly back then either.

3

SupaflyIRL t1_j89pssq wrote

It’s more norm than exception to have even a full group of like 20 full grown professional adults at prime time not bother to call ahead for even a random night out and just show up.

“Oh it’s not an event it’s just Jeff’s birthday! Anyway there are 20 of us and we’re gonna complain all night about how you’re having trouble accommodating this surprise (to you not Jeff, we’ve all known for weeks)!”

I used to be a waitress at a sports bar and you’re right, it’s absolutely awful. You’d think you’d make a ton of money but people sit for HOURS drinking whatever $2 beer is on special and their tab is maybe $150 by the end of it. Brutal.

14

thehoagieboy t1_j8a1207 wrote

There are probably not $2 beers at Victory. There's the added bonus of an IPA or two that probably have upward of 7% ABV and it's gonna be along vomit filled, falling down, drunken night. Ahh to be young and stupid again.

I was more of a nights and weekends gal, this one was far less crowded than the one on south street so we’d always go here. I had friends that lived in the building to the left (it was Oakwood at the time) so I spent way too many late nights here before stumbling home to my apartment up near the art museum.

My high school graduation let out at like 10pm? It was a wednesday.

That IHOP went from dead to "Fire marshall's maximum stated capacity" in fifteen minutes.

At least two people quit instantly. The shift manager was cooking and coming out every five minutes to apologize.

We would have left but we were with people. :\

darwinpolice t1_j8anei1 wrote

It seems like an awful place for this kind of event, too. Don't get me wrong, I really like Victory and that location is a perfectly nice place to drink, but Victory doesn't make a lot of beers that you can drink all day without getting absolutely shitfaced. If you're showing up at a bar at 11 in the morning and planning on being there till later in the evening, you want Miller, not Hop Devil.
