ChatGPT has been quite a wake-up. Things had progressed much faster and much further than most of us had known, or guessed.

I guess GPT allows people to see how the most probable “interface” with AI is gonna look.

Most probably text, speech and art, not robots or AI driven cars…

I must say text and speech was mostly self evident, but I admit I have never thought artistic production to come this early.

Interestingly upper middle and lower upper class will get impacted first.

Upscale art is seen as a surrogate of success and in my experience the main or second most talked about topic of very rich people.

AI will allow increasing art production 100x, this will decrease added value of new production and increase value of preAI production.

I think art value is going to quickly equate social network value of the artist. NFTs representing that could shine :-)

With large part of human intellectual production being automatically produced, I think an even larger value will be given to physical characteristics like good look, performance in sport, performance in living arts like singing or acting.

Doomer BS. Even if the worse case scenario comes to be, it will be a disaster, a mass extinction level catastrophe, but we will adopt and survive. Absolute, total, worst of the worst, like 10% of the world population dies.

Lots of interesting problems:

Songs/music videos will become virtually free and instantaneous to make.

What genre will survive?

I suspect they will be a “merger” of celebrity profiles allowing the top ones to do music, real TV, paintings and generally outrageous things all together.

Elon Musk will “make” classical music and Jazz, the Rock, Hard Rock, water paintings etc… as everyone could make the same, value will be locked to their persona with tokens.

We will come back to the middle ages in a way, with relics of Saints being traded all over Europe :-)

The way things go, pretty good digital avatar of those people will become available for a few dollars to everyone. Seeing the power of mimetism, I can easy see people interact directly with them instead of with each others.

We could end up with maybe a hundred celebrities AI clones providing all interactions for everything…

And yet you don't think AGI and ASI can fix climate change?

Doomerism isn't something new, humans love romanticize the idea of our imminent extinction.

And they have been wrong every time.

some of you seem to think that all our problems will be solved and we dont have to worry about x. Youre in for a shock when those problems do hit you like a ton of bricks

  1. I don't think the probability of the worst case happening is very high at all 2)I don't live in a place that will be the most effected, which sadly are the places that contributed the least to the problem to begin with (mostly the developing world, that wouldn't have the resources to deal and adopt to the damage). So no, the odds of me or anybody that I know dying are not very high, becouse I was born in the right place. Also, if we do achieve an AGI that can do RND, I have no doubt we will develop better, more sustainable and much cleaner ways of generating power, growing food, and transporting stuff. Or if it comes much later, to the point where the worst in unavoidable, it will help us to limit the damage.

I still think human made art, music especially included, will still have value. There is a deference between someone just generating a piece of music Vs someone spending years to learn an instrument, develop Thier vocal skills, putting thought and effort in writing songs and putting real human emotions into your work. Just like fas food didn't replace fancy restaurants AI generated music will never replace music made by humans. (Or at least the good stuff)

Carbon is not toxic, it is just at the wrong place at the highest possible entropy state.

To reverse that entropy you need energy. And that energy has to be immensely plentiful and immensely dense.

The mass of carbon itself has absolutely no importance and whether polymerised and put back where it came from, or as biochar in the ground or even frozen at the poles will do.

So yes, AGI and fusion energy could start to do something about atmospheric carbon levels…

AGI could do something about anything.

By definition.

Singularity, the topic of this forum, means it could do anything about anything.

I’m not saying it can’t do anything, but even the smartest ASI possible can’t break the laws of physics or do something that is impossible. and why are you so sure that it’l wanna do our dirty work? Why are we instantly saying A.I = slave? Imagine if you were created just to be an unpaid worker, how would you feel?

The ultimate age of consumerism. Machines will put in the work and everyone will receive UBI. If UBI is not installed properly there will be riots, looting, assassinations of AI developers etc... If everything goes well we will become unrecognizable to each other since everyone will live in their own bubbles with their own AI generated video games, shows, porn, news feed, AI friends and girlfriends etc...

There will be no reason to interact with people anymore. Majority of people will just spend time in VR and in their own house. Food will get made by AI and delivered to you by an autonomous drone. No reason to go out for a doctor visit since your personal assistant will know your body better than you and will be able to predict years in advance what will happen to it. You get my point.

And soon after that comes human augmentation with AI. The future looks interesting to say the least, but what we currently regard as "human" will no longer be there in the next 10 years.

I've recently been watching The last of us, and I personally want to go the other way lol (return to monkey). I know its a TV show, but it does seem like when there is no technology the relationships people have seem a lot deeper, more meaningful and life in general feels more fulfilling. Hey, maybe when AI gets far enough I'll request a personalized first person simulation of different time periods to see what it is like to grow up without technology. Sorry for the rant.

Why would celebrity be the thing to survive through this? Celebrity is already falling apart as people get more access to these folk and stop thinking of them as gods. If anyone can create the same thing as Elon why would people not see through the facade of celebrity? Your entire point hinges on there being someone with the singular vision to be worth it, that's not how humanity works. Celebrity is a product of capitalism and ignorance.

Maybe your generation, but the reality is that people born after 2000's are extremely lonely and already somewhat out of touch with reality due to extreme internet addiction. Even now you could argue that people aren't interacting with each other as much as they did 10 years ago since everyone is so atomized and living in their own online bubbles. I have no reason to believe that the current trend is going to reverse anytime soon.

Wasn't there a study suggesting that the average teenager/young adult spends 6-8 hours per day on their phone (and that's only phone without counting in the computer and other gadgets)? I think there was another study that also suggested that every third interviewed person in the US doesn't have a real friend. Humanlike AI will be able to fix all of that, further reducing reasons to go outside and meet friends/partners.

CrispinMK t1_j6n8m51 wrote

I want to agree with u/Iffykindofguy but I think the generational distinction is important. Like, sure, people aren't going to stop going out for drinks with their friends just because there is an AI option all of a sudden. But for future generations who haven't established those social/community bonds? It doesn't seem so far-fetched. Still, that sort of cultural shift won't happen nearly as fast as people are predicting.

Iffykindofguy t1_j6ng711 wrote

Social activity starts with your parents so unless those babies grow up in isolation, which is possible, they will always seek interaction. Not to mention digital interaction IS interaction. Some of my longest friends are people Ive ve met online.

Money will turn into luxury credits in about 20 years. People will contribute based on need/aspiration/and reward.

We'll all be fine for the most part but will need to do some community service at least if you want to afford a playstation 10 or whatever.

Food, education, and healthcare will all be free, aside from ivy league schools or special free market food stuffs. The free market may resemble more of a barter system or could just exchange luxury tokens.

Markets are always in flux. They're humans interacting dynamically. What will be the outcomes from the decisions of millions upon millions of people? Who knows?

>What will happen to all the humans who work to produce these things when AI can do it all and all you need to make your own is a computer/internet connection

Massive decentralization, institutions people think are required will fade away, many big businesses won't be economically viable.

I stay in the sub because 1/3 of the posts are actually news, the other 2/3 are just people who don't know about AI and don't have a background in AI telling us the exact day of singularity and how it will affect everyone because their girlfriend's cousin works the Starbucks at Microsoft. Oh and complaints about the free ground breaking tool, Chat GPT.

If I was a mod, I'd make a separate subreddit for discussions and these kinds of posts, they are nice to socialize, but very little comes out of them. With AI growing at the speed it's growing, it'd be nice to have a hub with just news, research papers and the sort; people can dick around in the comments all they like.

It is another discussion, but in the West money is already a luxury credit.

In western europe, whatever you do, you will always have a roof under your head, heating between survival and comfort level, potable water, habeas corpus, no slavery/mandatory military service, something to eat, the right not to be beaten by your neighbors too often, healtcare at least of 90s technological level, hot shower from time to time, wifi to access all humanity knowledge and all audio/visual entertainment until the 2010s, for free.

Still people are depressed they are poor, when the poorest Europeans have way more than emperors of the past.

What's the next paradigm? That will completely depend on the speed that certain technologies proceed at, breakthroughs in the next few years will shape society going forward.
