There’s cheap like you don’t leave your house at home alone at night and cheap like you better enjoy the sound of crickets and driving 30 mins to find any sign of civilization.

My town is so small we may have a grocery store but if you are hungry and don’t want to drive or drive far you are SOL. And shit like Door Dash is “not available in my area” 🤣

I mean, we’ve owned a 3 bedroom mobile home just outside York for the last 7 years and our lot rent is under $500/ month, while a friend has a 3 bedroom apartment and pays closer to 1100 and they are in New Cumberland. We’re in a decent suburban area just off of 83 and are 20 minutes away from York/ Harrisburg/ Mechanicsburg while they’re on the Main Street above a row of businesses. I think it really all depends on location of where you are looking and what surroundings, amenities and traveling time you prefer.

I lived in PA all my life (until I moved bc too many areas just changed too much) I will always love it, it’ll always be home. But you couldn’t pay me to live there again! However to be fair- I feel that way about several states! However only one I’ve actually lived in, and that’s PA. But hey- there’s worse I’m sure!!!! If you’re moving for work, that’s one thing, depending on your reasons, you may want to look at some surrounding states that are not only much nicer but more affordable (don’t do NJ if you want affordable!)

My sister still lives in PA, she is a single woman supporting herself and she’s finally tired of working constantly for the bare minimum, and dealing with slum lords. She won’t buy bc she knows she isn’t staying in PA forever. She’s about to ready start looking at other states. Just really do your homework. Every friend I have, moved out of PA, like literally! Every person I know is now spread across the country.

I don’t know what parts of Philly you’ll find a whole house for rent under 1k a month! I owned properties in Philly and sold them. My in laws all own many rental properties and they’re actually very fair when it comes to their rentals. And even they don’t have anything for under 1k a month. Their cheapest is a 2 bdrm 1 bath, for 1200 plus utilities. But it’s also been completely renovated just about a year or so ago, so it’s immaculate, and honestly most landlords would be asking more or less 1500-1800 for this specific property. I’ve seen units that are “affordable” if you want to wear Kevlar from head to toe.

It’s behind the times, but I wouldn’t call it a “hellscape.” It has a certain charm, and to some who live here, crowded 4-lane highways lined with Paneras and Jersey Mikes as far as the eye can see is more terrifying.

There is history here and good people and opportunities for those who care. I can speak for Pottsville in particular: just got a state-of-the-art Alvernia Campus on top of a slew of new small businesses downtown (axe-throwing place going in soon, new ice cream shop). Yuengling is slowly but surely increasing their community involvement and events as the new guard moves in.

Don’t truly judge a place until you live it and actually know it. And if you lived here 20 years ago, it’s not the same.

A quick Google search would tell you all the statistics that you need about why it's a terrible county to live in. The hillbilly and redneck mentality Is also a good reason to stay away. Anything good that is in the county is far more plentiful elsewhere. Some people just bleed Guers and piss Yeungling. I'm glad I'm not one of them anymore. Best decision I ever made in my life was leaving that wasteland.

I help my Grandparents landlord a small apartment and we have a 1 bedroom we rent with all utilities and appliances (except cable, internet, ect) for $550 a month. There are other apartments in the area that are a pretty good deal as well. Only problem is you better like living in a small town. We don't have a Mall or fancy places to buy 3,000 different types of expensive shoes. in Emporium you can walk to pretty much everything for food and restaurants, but if you need something advanced you are driving or going to Amazon. We do have some of the last dark skies left in the North East though.

Other commenters have good points on location. It really depends on what you’re looking for in terms of housing and income. In addition to what you listed Cressona, Schuylkill Haven, Jim Thorpe, Orwigsburg, can be nice and I’m sure have options for your price point.

You should also consider your race and the political landscape in which you’ll be living. PA has sundown towns. In Hamburg for example, there are signs for at least one local white supremacy group.
