It’s a massive bubble. Way too many businesses and none of them are really adding anything special to the market. I’m from Oklahoma and we don’t even have legal recreational yet, only medicinal, but there are still two dispensaries on every street. They’re like Starbucks at this point.

Soon they'll be as ubiquitous as liquor stores.
deadliftothersup t1_j0bph1e wrote
That might also indicate that this might not be such a crazy bubble as well. Convenience and liquor stores don't individually add anything special to the snacks and booze markets, but people enjoy convenience much the same. They won't make VC startup money, but it could simply turn into lower profit margin steady business.
We can only hope that it doesn't all end up consolidated.

This is the right answer. It will also squeeze the off book sellers and drive more business to the shops, which with have higher sales volume to make up for reduced margin. (Unless we open too many shops)
I think the shops will eventually look like liquor stores, but I really hope not. I love how nice they are, in my town they built a $5M(guess) building and property. It looks amazing and is constantly packed. I assume it drives business to the shops around it too

Totally understandable. If you don't smoke often or have a low tolerance then ~$50 of dispensary bud will likely last you as long as a good bottle of whiskey lasts most people. I think prices are honestly fairly affordable for the occasional partaker. A bit high (pardon the pun), but quickly becoming reasonable.
I personally enjoy growing even though I don't smoke as often anymore. I like having flower that isn't super duper strong and having lots of it to either give away or make fun stuff with. But growing definitely isn't accessible for people living in small apartments, demanding work schedules or with children etc., so I can see why the demand is still there. I would also assume that outdoor grows are more difficult in MA than some places which ups the difficulty and initial investment.

One of the only requirements to grow weed commercially in MA was to prove you had access to a lot of cash, like a couple hundred thousands dollars if my memory is working properly.
And I'm sorry, but they are still selling enormous volume. It may have gotten a lot cheaper (I have seen $120/oz for pre-ground flower) but they are still making money hand over fist. While they now worry about 'where's the bottom' of the market, several years of insane profit taking have gone by. If they already blew all that money they made, that's their problem. Welcome to capitalism, dispensary moguls.

If not already a gardener, or if you don't have an outdoor space, even very limited indoor space can keep a moderate user supplied for life. Indoors costs more and has a big carbon footprint, but the resources for learning how to do it, get seeds and equipment, etc. are astounding now.
Many people can't grow due to living situations etc. But if enough of us do it, we keep driving down the price of commercial cannabis, so win/win.
Also just a pro tip: befriend an amateur but experienced grower. We always have so much more than we need. Offer to help out with trimming (the only real intensive labor involved) and expect a handsome reward.
Been smoking the stuff for 45 years, and I would put my own bud up against anything I've ever had from a dispensary.

If you have even a mild curiosity - get some home grown. What's sold in dispensaries is manufactured with no quality oversight or enforcement. They have lobbied to raise limits on mold and bacteria. Even testing is just a marketing gimmick. The guy who smokes his own, puts a LOT more care into his product than a giant corporation growing thousands of plants at a time and whose annual profits depend on selling any contaminated or infected product.
It's just a matter of time before people start dying (again) because of lax regulatory oversight and enforcement.

From reporter Ross Cristantiello:
Recreational cannabis has never been cheaper in Massachusetts than it was this year.
Prices have been steadily decreasing for more than a year, and those running businesses in the burgeoning industry expect them to keep dropping. While customers may be rejoicing over greater access to marijuana, the lowering of prices has some concerned about the ramifications for cultivators, small businesses, and the employees that make it all run.
Examining cannabis prices and the reasons they have decreased so significantly offers a peek into the state of an industry at a crossroads.
Cheaper than ever
In October, the average price for a gram of flower (the buds of the cannabis plant that are typically ground up and smoked) dropped to $7.76, an all-time low, according to the most recent data from the state’s Cannabis Control Commission.
The average price for a gram did rise slightly in November, back up to $8.04. Still, that was below September’s average price for a gram of flower, $9.17. The average price in September was also an all-time low at the time. So was the average price in August.
Cannabis prices stayed relatively consistent from late 2018, when recreational sales began, through 2019, 2020, and most of 2021. The average price for a gram of flower did drop to $9.74 in April 2020 as the pandemic upended business in a number of ways. But prices shot back up, hovering above $14 for a gram until June 2021. Prices decreased every month since then, with the steepest drop coming between September and October of this year.
Recreational cannabis sales revenue is also going down. Adult-use marijuana sellers in Massachusetts brought in $112.2 million in November, the lowest amount since February of this year, according to data from the CCC. Sales numbers peaked in July, with $132.4 million earned. Sales revenue fell steadily through the fall, but a significant decrease occurred between October and November.

Several companies keep track of where you're located at all times via your phone. Every time you use a credit card you're essentially lifting your hind leg and attempting to mark your territory. Go to any website and hundreds of companies have your preferences. I don't know. I think there's a little more to it than "freedom is when megacorps know more about me than I know about myself but showing a government ID is the real problem".

When I see what people pay nationally, it's not that bad. I'm all for cheaper though. One of my local dispensaries does smalls OZ for 100 locationally and I stock up when I see the deal.

Let me explain out for them, there’s an oversupply, cuz you greedy jerks charged too much from the onset and everyone who was for the legalization just kept going to their regular street dealer cuz they had better prices, you’re welcome

Plus MA made a ton of swag flower and I find that’s what being sold right before it expires. So the decent stuff is still $40-$50 an eight which is too high. The prices are only good for old people who don’t know good weed, no disrespect tho

How much of that “usage dropping” is due to nearby states legalizing recreational?
No need to drive to MA when you can buy it in your own home town.

Good. Prices are absolutely ridiculous for what you're getting, especially for concentrate.

Rather pay 20 an 1/8 than deal with others. Which when you surf the local menus you’ll find plenty, I live in wester part and no shortage of deals. 1 gram of concentrate you can find for 20/30. Same with carts.

Today I bought a 1/2 oz of Jelly Rancher (≈19%) "popcorn nuggets" (much larger than I expected, really just regular sized lol) for $60 (including tax) - I am pleased as punch yo! Find brand from Curaleaf is surprisingly excellent considering the price, really happy to see prices falling and generally just a wider range of price options.

I have literally got the same brands, same product (1 g vaporizer cartridges) usually about 40 to 75% less in Arizona, Illinois, and California.
I remember the stand out was getting four 1g select brand cartridges for $99 including tax in Arizona. A single cartridge of the same type was $114 Massachusetts after tax.
I was in AZ last week and they were 2x for $77 plus tax, so still less than 1/2 price.

5-10 years after federal legalization, it’ll be in the grocery stores. (Same as alcohol and tobacco)
Firstly they’ll move to be controlled by the alcohol commission.
Then medical will be restricted to pharmaceutical capsules/tinctures.

Dispensaries don't need to compete against oneanother for my dollar. They gotta compete against the same guy I've known for years, and the priced he sells at.
That's why the prices are low. If I want bud, I can go to my bud. That's who they gotta beat.
Greengrass30 t1_j074rud wrote
I went to a dispensary once. There was like 10 people working the storefront and another 1 or 2 checking ID before letting you in. I went in and they just pointed me to a touchscreen to place an order. Wasn't the experience I thought I was going to get
MrRileyJr t1_j07bq1h wrote
Did you try talking to any of the 10 people? I've never had a problem talking with them about what to get, and seen others do the same. The only time they point at the screen was to have me take a look at something, because they're basically the menu. Whenever I talk they're always happy to help & knowledgeable, usually get better stuff that way too. This has been at several dispensaries too, not a one-off.
pab_guy t1_j07ave5 wrote
Yeah the regulations were designed by assholes who wanted the experience to suck. So stupid and pointless and wasteful. Plus you can't even see the fucking product before purchase. Fuck all of that.
NativeMasshole t1_j07l8o1 wrote
That has nothing to do with regulations. We actually had some deli-style places before covid killed that. I've had some places pop a canister to show me the product. They probably just don't want you to see it because it's all dry AF.
