Sanitation workers should have a ‘tow now’ capability…take pic of the situation to prove the trash truck / car issue and get the car towed now by a tow truck. It’s a critical issue on trash days.

Heck, automated enforcement of certain parking infractions (e.g. parked in a bus lane/bus zone) can be done fairly easily with cameras on buses and would likely be a program that would fund itself and the city refuses to even do something like that.

darwinpolice t1_j6ods1g wrote

Absolutely. Trash connection is one of the most important functions of city government, and impeding it should be met with a significant fine.

Cars parked illegally should be automatically towed, it's a blight on the city that imposes on everyone else all so that one asshole didn't have to walk more than a block.

WhereDaHinkieFlair t1_j6oke3o wrote

If its a blight on the city that means its happening everywhere, right? Then if everyone couldn't park illegally then it wouldn't be as simple as parking a few blocks away.

There arent enough parking spots for everybody based off the density, which is why there is so much illegal parking. Its not just laziness.

−25

NonIdentifiableUser t1_j6omaha wrote

Ok but the solution isn’t to just shrug and accept things like having to walk your kid in the fucking street because some jerkoffs in Dodge Rams or BMWs have blocked three of the 4 crosswalks. Other cities have similar density and don’t have this issue.

44

WhereDaHinkieFlair t1_j6ov3da wrote

Ok, but what is the solution? Towing every illegally parked car is just a bandaid, and it is just going to piss off the people who live there and make spots harder to come by everywhere. The only real solution to the problem is either less cars or more parking. Not just "stop being lazy".

−7

thalience t1_j6p1h84 wrote

Tow aggressively enough, and there will be less cars one way or another.

23

AbsentEmpire t1_j6p8nji wrote

Correct, the solution is less demand for cars overall.

The real solution is not just towing enforcement for illegal parking, which needs to happen anyway, but also setting the price to park to match the level of demand.

As you pointed out above there are not enough parking spots in the city, and building more parking isn't realistically possible, nor would it ever solve the problem.

This means that street parking follows a classic economics problem known as the tragedy of the commons. The solution to which is to apply a price metric that reflects the supply and demand levels. The solution to not enough free street parking to make parking cost more money until the price results in the demand level matching or slightly falling below the level of supply.

17

Little_Noodles t1_j6ouvrs wrote

You’re not entirely wrong, but my neighbors up the street regularly park dangerously into the intersection when there is ample and abundant parking literally just on the other side of the other end of the block (so, block and a half to two blocks walk maximum).

Neighbors on this end of my block meanwhile, park in front of curbcuts to avoid walking across the street when they can see parking half a block away.

Some people that are currently fucking up would make better choices if presented with good options. But some people are actually that lazy and disinterested in their neighbors’s safety and well-being

13

FordMaverickFan t1_j6nzs38 wrote

If only we invented some kind of truck that could tow cars that are parked incorrectly.

We could even give it a creative name like "scoopy doopy takey trucky' or something.

We might even have some really unlikable government agency that the Commonwealth had to take over due to corruption or some guy named Blew Lum to take the cars.

Oh well maybe next life people will be held accountable for their actions.

It was his recommendation to contact 215-683-9773 since it’s recorded. We’ve been using that number ever since, and miraculously, cars seem to get ticketed now. It’s been over a month now, and illegal parking on our block seems to be getting better.

I wish they would start towing abandoned/never used cars! There are at least two on my block and one is a gargantuan old Lincoln that takes up two spots, which often translates into four spots when dicks park super far away from it but not far enough away that even a small car such as mine can fit in. Also I wish work trucks weren’t allowed overnight parking on my block. That would clear up a lot of spots and there would be less intersection and sidewalk parking. I know that some of my neighbors have two cars plus a work vehicle. It’s ridiculous.

1

DisciplineShot2872 t1_j6pe16g wrote

Only two? There are four, if not five, on my block! At the moment, there's still enough parking but several homes are being rehabbed right now. If they don't have rear parking the pressure is going to increase soon.

3

heatherplants t1_j6phpsr wrote

At least 2. I’m sure there are more but I haven’t obsessively observed every single car within a block of my house. Plus there’s one “work truck” that the self proclaimed mayor of my block had parked in front of my house for months until he moved it a few doors down in front of his house months ago and clearly isn’t used for any work. It hasn’t moved since then. I’m over it.

DisciplineShot2872 t1_j6phzms wrote

That sucks! I walk my dog twice a day, and there's only parking on one side, so I've gotten pretty familiar with them over the last year. It started with the one right next to mine, and I started actively looking after that. All four tires being flat is a dead giveaway.

2

heatherplants t1_j6pjgpn wrote

Yeah there was one car at the end of my long block (a spot which I’d happily take after a hard day of work) that was literally on a jack for months. The tire was eventually changed and it hasn’t moved for more months.
