There are some good parts in the southeast. The Anacostia river is usually where the dividing line is, and even that area is getting better.

If we can have quality overnight transit, we might actually get some quality nightlife.

They have more than two rails on most lines and, as such, can shut down one rail without affecting service.

Does being close to the Capitol even matter anymore? There's also an open air drug market on North Capitol only a couple blocks from the capitol that get's the occasional drive by. If proximity mattered, that area would get put to a different use.

Shuttle bus is really quick and does tend to arrive in sync with the trains. However, I agree, you'd still want to factor that in for departure times.

But that's only on NPS land. Elsewhere, DC is very protest friendly. You can generally just start up an impromptu protest. Outside of specifically targeting people's houses, there's no need to contact the police. MPD will even direct traffic for your protest if they see one.

If you download the Charm Pass app on your phone, you can actually buy a ticket as you are sitting on the train.

Yes, to second this, there's often a lot of times when people just buy a coffee and camp all day. The people who just want to come enjoy a coffee and/or pastry and can't find a spot because of it.

If you want another look, this one actually compares deaths from external causes, not just all cause mortality. You're still much safer in cities that aren't Baltimore than rural areas.

You are way more likely to die in a rural area than an urban one. Urban areas do have a slightly higher risk of death through violent crime, but the reduction in traffic fatalities makes up for that considerably. Also, if you ever do get shot or stabbed, you're really close to 3 level 1 trauma centers and one level 2 trauma center. That will greatly increase your risk of survival. Cities are much better places to get stabbed than rural areas.

Plenty of families take metro on the weekends, and I see them all the time. They also pay $2/person/trip and have for some time, it's only federal holidays where we get weekend service and weekday prices.

Metro isn't really a moneymaker, the same that roads don't make money. Fares pay for some, but taxes pay for the rest. Quality, inexpensive service takes cars off the road. I'm happy for my tax dollars to go to reducing the number of cars I have to deal with, especially those from Maryland.

Adams Morgan tends to be among the priciest neighborhoods in DC. You might be getting a good deal or a scam if that's where the apartment is listed on a low price.

The Metro increasing off-peak weekday fares would more than cover it. Also, during holidays, we get weekend service, with longer headways due to lower ridership. Why should we have to pay weekday rush prices for weekend service?

The new metro proposal will do away with off-peak fares, making a round trip $13 per person at max, rather than $4 per person. For 4 people, that's $52 vs. $16.

People have done a metro speedrun, I'm sure you can try a Smithsonian speedup. Not all are on the mall though. You're going to want to buy a train ticket to NYC though and I'd recommend the Acela as it's faster so you can hit the 2 in NYC.

Because of the war with Russia, Kiev metro had to reduce the frequency of it's lines off peak to 6 minutes. On peak times without a war, the headways are 1 hr 40 minutes. It's not a first-world problem, it's a carbrained problem.
