It was probably the safest that Broad St has been in months.

For the most part. Crowd chanted asshole to the cops but otherwise let them do their job.

The cops also tried to be proactive and warn anyone making that first attempt to climb that theyd get arresteddetained...but they couldnt catch them all.

One climber claimed it was his constitutional right and that once he got on the pole the cop wasn't legally allowed to touch him. I think that might have been the highlight of my night.

Yes, I believe that was established in the landmark Supreme Court case, In re: Base!, in which the Court overturned a prior matter involving immunity from prosecution.

95

Hib3rnian t1_itldvhh wrote

I believe this is also the case for games of Freedom (aka Jailbreak). Essentially "Safe on or touching base, from any type of capture or detention"

A common mistake, but the actual caselaw refers to "The Floor Is Lava", not Jailbreak. As long as the defendant kept his feet on the pole and off the ground, he's legally untouchable.

Nott really. I mean, we're not assholes, we are just honest. Fans booed Machado and Soto and even cheered Santa. Now, they may be more civil in comparison to Eagles fans but a partial reason is because that base gets so amped up and drunk while tailgating. There's also more alcohol involved, which does away with inhibitions and let's the testosterone flow.

These may be excuses but all Philly sports fans are grouped together. Truth is, we tell it how it is. We don't tolerate softies like Ben Simmons. We will be straight up. Love ya when you're good and criticize when you aren't performing to your potential. We are as honest as they come.

18

NoREEEEEEtilBrooklyn t1_itly8jt wrote

I’m talking Philly fans in general. We are assholes and we shouldn’t hide from it. It’s what makes us special. We threw D-Cells at JD Drew, we threw snowballs at Santa and Jimmy Johnson, told a 100+ year old woman from Minnesota to go fuck herself. We made fun of Joe Jurevicious’ dead son. Hell, one of us threw up on a small child from our own fanbase out of pure spite. To run away from the asshole label is to reject your own humanity. Embrace it and be the asshole we all are.

2008 was far and away the rowdiest. I remember seeing multiple fights, cars tipped, and stuff getting burned. Some idiot was also firing off Roman candles at Broad and Shunk. One of them hit a father's back who was holding his daughter. The cops were also really aggressive that night. One tried gripping me up because he thought I threw a bottle at him. Thankfully, two other cops came over and told him that it wasn't me.

3

throwawaythedo t1_itplszn wrote

I think the difference could be because just 3 weeks ago, during regular season, The Phillies weren’t even on the map. In 2008, regular season tickets were hard to come by and everyone in the city had time to jump on the bandwagon. Prior to winning the Penant, a lot of Philly had no clue that the Phils were making a run - passion is mostly reserved for life-long fans, who are generally laid back. Add a year of passion to the city, along with folks who are simply excited by the excitement and you’re looking at a different crowd. I could be off, but that’s my intuition. GO PHILS!!!

Why? This is exactly why psychologists say that Citizen isn’t healthy and creates anxiety.

““If you have this constant hypervigilance, that your nervous system has to have because something bad is [seemingly] always happening, that’s problematic for anxiety,” says Elizabeth Cohen, a clinical psychologist who specializes in treating people with anxiety disorders, commenting on apps like Citizen. “It’s totally overestimating the probability of things.””

OptimusSublime t1_itm0prc wrote

Maybe I overestimated how often I checked, it was like twice, honestly. And I have a healthy respect for the app, I have seen those studies, and it doesn't impact me nearly as much as I am told it should. 99% of the time the things that posted are so far away as to be meaningless to me, and the rest of the time its funny shit like someone was seen with a rake or something like that. There have been instances where I have heard gunshots nearby and checked the app for the express purpose of chatting with other people about it and to get more info if and when it becomes available. I'm not burying my face in the app and hyperventilating about every single push notification.
