I feel bad for the lead. They did everything they could to make her look bad with clumsy moments and everything else... A really tough show to watch, honestly, rough and dark.

It really was a difficult show to watch. Interesting stories and characters, but I really had to force myself to finish out the series, it felt like a depressing slog. Obviously the subject matter is not meant to be light and cheery, but it's not great when you're dreading each new episode...

Not surprised, the production felt so cheap.

A book where 95% of the story took place in a period setting, added a bunch of modern day material. Wonder why.

Edit: Re-submission of my idea for the next League of Legends based TV project just to be a Tales from The Crypt style story-time show with Lamb and Wolf as narrators showing random people who live in Runeterra with random champions showing up.

Tbh, I remember when watching outlander I was wishing we could see modern stuff with Frank(her husband). The whole time travel aspect is a huge interest to a lot of people.

Hahaha, how long did you last??

Put_Adventurous t1_j6p787g wrote

I came in half way through the shoot with a crew that replaced the previous crew, and stayed until the end. In the couple months I was there, we went through 2 directors, 2 DPs and had a 10 day hiatus due to one of the directors being unceremoniously canned. I think the show burned through 3 directors total.

I actually enjoyed the show for what it was worth. The subject matter was interesting, albeit some of the story telling was a little heavy handed.

I’m bummed to see it got canceled…but not in the least bit surprised.

HunterLeonux t1_j6kvyj5 wrote

Just from watching the trailer, the show has a compelling premise. Was there something off about the execution?

Admittedly, I haven't watched it, so maybe I'm part of the problem if the core issue is "not enough people watched it".

37

monsieurxander t1_j6l3s6h wrote

Trailers made it clear it didn't resemble the book. Instead of making a killer limited series, they decided to add a bunch of original material to milk a short book indefinitely.

Some additions to American Gods worked well but were quickly abandoned. Easter was supposed to be a big character but Chenoweth left after the first season.

f-ingsteveglansberg t1_j6mgrop wrote

Season 1 of The Handmaid's Tale is pretty much the first book. They cut out the mother character and things like Gilead having tourists but most of the story is intact.

Most of the extra stuff is when they ran out of source material.

Season 2 would see a name change to "Fleishman is in BIG Trouble!"

I actually liked the show more than the book. It explored the why more than the how of her experience and adding her mom was an interesting story line. I was hoping for another season.

pRp666 t1_j6lgsw5 wrote

My wife loved the book. She couldn't stand that show. It seems it's another situation that they alienated the original medium audience while doing nothing in particular to gain a new audience.

16

f-ingsteveglansberg t1_j6mgwf8 wrote

It doesn't help that there were some awful movies recently that seemed to borrow heavily from the book like Antebellum and I seem to recall another but can't think of the name.

6

pRp666 t1_j6o2sqf wrote

That probably doesn't help. I did finish the series. I plan to read the book. The show seemed unwilling or unable to address the major themes of the book.

Its games and fandom are a place where women, POC, and the LGBTQI community feel welcome and we are very proud to bring these stories to life.”

It is never a good sign when they start off with this when promoting upcoming works.

On one hand I'm disappointed, but it's better for a novel adaptation to go out strong than to be dragged out into nothingness like The Handmaid's Tale or The Man in the High Castle.

21

lightsongtheold t1_j6l3f1a wrote

They only managed to adapt a third of the book. That is hardly going out on a high. It would have been better to just make this as a miniseries from the get go!

48

lord_pizzabird t1_j6lkunm wrote

Figured this thing was doomed when the season ended so abruptly.

That last episode felt weird, like it was unfinished somehow.

9

f-ingsteveglansberg t1_j6mgn33 wrote

Fan of the book but living in Europe so waiting until it is available here before watching.

So I am actually surprised that it wasn't a mini series. It's not too long of a book. If they could get all of The Handmaid's Tale (314 pages) into a 10 episode run, it feels like you could hit most of Kindred (287 pages) into an 8 episode run.

3

lightsongtheold t1_j6neiin wrote

With Disney looking to enact a bit of cost cutting and Paramount and WBD both pulling dead content to save cash I’d not be surprised if Disney follow their lead and Kindred never makes it to Europe. It is a dead show without a conclusion. Airing it is pretty pointless at this stage.

theres simply too many shows on too many services. then they just dump an entire season with no promo and expect ppl to find it

and these networks still making more services- shame.

10

Kalse1229 t1_j6kxqze wrote

Wait, it was an ongoing series? Never read the book or watched the show, but a quick search on Wikipedia has it listed as a miniseries. Plus the book itself isn't terribly long either, so having it be an ongoing series would likely become repetitive at best unless it was an anthology or something.

7

lightsongtheold t1_j6l3ai2 wrote

I was very excited to hear about this adaptation coming, but I was turned off when I learned it wouldn't be a limited series (one season) and wouldn't cover the whole book in one go. thisisapornaccountg t1_j6mwkfo wrote

It should've only been one season in the first place. I'm tired of Networks dragging out adaptations for money only to butcher them so extensively they end up canceled anyways. Like, the book is less than 300 pages! How tf do you figure you can make 2+ seasons out of that??

This type of stuff is better suited to guilty wypipo imo. They can feel good because they aren't slavemasters and their lives aren't as shitty as the child laborers in the Congo mining their cobalt for iPhones/Teslas/etc. - I mean, not as shitty as the slaves who ONLY existed hundreds of years ago.

I don't know if I agree with all of that. There are plenty of black people, mostly black people that I come in contact with actually, that love that book. Some of us just can't deal with these stories, though.
